09 Sorento Rear Differential

I want to change my rear diff fluid but I have heard that the rear needs to be jacked up 8" off the ground or there will be insufficient amount of fluid in the diff which will cause early failure. Is this true? I have posted this before but it was deleted by admins because I didn't update profile. I have not seen this done on any other makes and this is the first time I have ever heard of such of thing. Any thoughts?

There was a Kia Tech Times #Kt2005022817 issued on 28 Feb 2005 that said "to position the rear wheels at least 8 inches higher than the front wheels. This procedure is required to ensure that the rear axle housing is filled with the specified volume of gear oil (1.6L or 54 oz.)..."

I don't know if this applies to 2008/2009 and can't remember if i bothered to elevate the rear wheels when i changed the gear oil. For the rear of my 2008 3.3L 4WD LX I just removed, measured and replaced 1.69 Qts. of gear oil. For the front the Tech Times says the vehicle can be level. I removed, measured and replaced 1.37 Qts. from the front.

So far, so good.

How long ago did you replace your oil?

You can do it!

I've never heard of that, but it does make sense to me if the rear diff's fill port sits low on the housing and there's a horizontally-spinning gear that sits above the fill port. I don't know what the 2009 looks like inside, but a rear diff doesn't typically have a high-positioned bevel gear like that. That's the only reason I can see for tilting it. As long as all the gears dip below the oil level line, I think you're good. But really, the way to be sure is just find the capacity spec in your manual and make sure that amount gets in. If it doesn't, then I suppose I would tilt the car in that case. I doubt Kia would just make up a story like that if it didn't have some validity to it.

That sounds logical/ideal. I guess what I will do is start off with it level. Drain. Measure. Try to put in spec amount of oil. When it fills up, see how much I have left in container. Determine how much I used. If not at spec amount, then jack up rear to 8" and finish. Miss anything? May need to get some 6 ton Jack's for the the axle.

You can do it!

I think 3 ton jack stands are fine. Just put some chocks on the front tires for safety, and make sure you take the fill plug off before draining it.

..and get ready for some really stinky oil to come out.

I tried my three ton Jack's and they weren't tall enough unfortunately. (hf brand) I am about to reach 100k so I need to do it soon. Thanks for that thumbnail of the article.

You can do it!
