👎Horrible Fuel Economy! ⛽

I love my Sorento. Installed a touch screen head unit and a backup cam. Most people think my 2005 is more like a 2012.

The only thing I hate is the gas mileage I get from it. Other than reducing the weight and changing the way I drive, is there anything mechanically I can do to improve it?

Run 2-3psi higher than recommended in tires.
Clean intake and check for vacuum leaks, check and possibly replace plugs, check injectors, air filter, coils. Get compression checked. Get O2 sensors and cat checked.

I get about 13.8 us miles per gallon in the city.

Thanks forgot about tires. How do I check the o2 sensors. I just replace them right away if they throw an error code.

Like dubber said, do a compression test. If you find one or more cylinders has low compression, think really hard whether you want to spend anymore money on this car. Low compression on an old engine is almost never inexpensive to fix (even on your own), and that would definitely cause poor gas mileage. So that's a quick, cheap test to do first.

If compression is ok, clean the throttle body. And don't just spray the cleaner at it.. wipe it really well with a cloth (not a paper towel) until there's no dark ring around the area where the throttle plate sits in the fully-closed position.

Then do a valve treatment through the air intake. CRC sells a valve cleaner that's marketed more to GDI engine owners, but it works for older engines as well. Let it soak for a bit after the treatment just like the directions on the can tell you.

Change your air filter, certainly.

Do a spark test on each spark plug wire to make sure they're all getting spark. Then replace all the existing plugs with new ones. Those are cheap and could also contribute to poor mpg.

Also make sure your brake caliper pistons aren't frozen, which can cause the car to constantly be working against a small amount of braking pressure when moving. You just flip them open and push the piston in with big channel locks or a special brake tool that they sell at any auto parts store for under $10.

These are all things that have contributed to poor gas mileage for me on previous vehicles. Good luck.

Over 50k miles mostly business/highway (not sparing the ponies) in my 3.5 V6 I averaged 22 miles/imp gall which is equiv to 18.3 miles/us gall. Certainly a lot less if I were doing local commutes. But that was in another era
