Will it be OK?
Recently I purchased all new tires and rims at Pep Boys. The 16x7 Proline rims were on sale for $199.00, for the whole set! So I went for it and got them. Next, I purchased all four tires that were size 205/40/16 and they looked great. My question is would've 205/50/16 still fitted onto my 1996 Kia Sephia without any modifications? The boys there at Pep Boys said that they would only install the 40's, not the 50's. So I didn't have no choice but to purchase the tires. It's a policy that they have and thats why the 50's were not installed. Guess I have to live with the tires I purchased, then I can go for the 50's. So my question is would've the 50's still have worked for my Kia?
I believe that 205/50/16 tires are usually used for small SUV/Trucks and cars with larger wheel base. I could be wrong with that, so we'll wait for someone else to reply. Also you can prolly find some more info on Tirerack.
The 205/40/16 will give you about -0.8% error on your speedo/gearing. The 205/50/16 will be too far off at about +6% approx (4.5mph @ 70) so looks like the tire fitters are right.
