Default Spark plugs on a 2002 Kia Spectra

I am trying to get my car to pass emissions. Not having much luck. It seems the fuel is running rich? Anyway, I am giving it a basic tuneup and am trying to find out where the spark plugs are located.

Even running rich you should be passing emissions. You must have a check engine light on.

If it is like my 99 Sportage, you have to remove the metal crossover pipe that goes between the air filter and the intake manifold. There are three bolts on the one end and two bolts on the other end, plus you have to take off the large rubber flex hose and three other smaller hoses and unplug the wire from the Idle Air control valve. Then you have to remove the two bolts holding the accelerator control cable mounting plate and the 6 bolts holding the spark plug compartment cover on.

Ease the cover off and you will expose the plugs, coils and wires. Of course there should be no oil, dirt or water in the compartment. If there is oil, then you probably have a bad valve cover gasket and should replace it.

BE SURE YOU MAKE NOTE OF HOW THE WIRES ARE CONNECTED. Two plugs are like normal plugs and will come out after you pull off the boot and wire. Mine were really on there good and I had a hard time getting them off.

The other two plugs are underneath the coils. You have to unhook the wires and take out the two bolts and then you can pull them up and off.

The plugs are way down in there, so you need an extension and one of those spark plug sockets with the rubber peice to grip the plug and pull it out once you unloosen it.

From what I have read here, you should use nothing but NGK plugs and set the gap at .030, not .040.

Then put it all back together. Of course be sure to put the wires on the same way they were when you took them off.

The crossover tube [I hope I am calling it by the right name] has a gasket on the left side which is a bit of a bear to line up.

Just start all the bolts and tighten then up a little until you have all five bolts started, then tighten them up.

Sure not like changing the plugs on my old Ford pickup truck.

Location is the same as the Sportage, but a little easier on the spectra - see this diagram

Wow! That looks way easier. It's kind of a pain on the Sportage, but I just did it so hopefully I am good for another 30K miles.

Are they running the emissions test when the car is cold or been sitting a little bit?
