Default shift linkage broken?

I have an AT 2001 Kia Sephia. It is my winter car and has been sitting in the lawn all summer. When I went to move it I found that it was incredibly hard to shift out of park. My mistake I forced it... Slowly I moved it to Drive and tried to move... the car then died due to a bad battery. I replaced the battery and now I cant start the car because it is stuck in drive (2nd gear to be precise). The shifter is now very loose and doesnt change gears when moved. What could this be? How much would it cost if I did it myself? If I brought it to a mechanic? Please help

Thumbs up

It sounds like the cable has either broken or detached from the shifter. Before you get a mechanic to look at it remove the console and you should be able to see the problem. the console will have to come out anyway and it costs nothing to look, it might be simple to fix youself. The moral is don't let a car sit undriven for too long, it does them no good. Best of luck with it.
