Hey Alpaccino! Good evening! I just couldn't help responding to your question- since I myself have been struggling to keep my engine as stock as possible. I agree with you, don't damage your perfect engine by installing a turbo unit! From experience, it is not going to be as neat or effective without all the plumbing and hardware, and a mappable ECU!Too far out! Besides the B3 engine is plenty powerful to take on any 1600 without so radical a mod! for example there are pistons from the Mazda B5 engine (1500cc) that any machine shop could fit to kick up your displacement.
I've seen Prides using a 32/36 DGV 2-barrel downdraft Weber carburetor, with port and polished heads, and tuned headers beating 2.0's! Oh, he also lightened the flywheel and clutchplate. All that can be done by a good machine shop for less money than the cost of a turbo kit and still keep your perfect engine perfect!
I recently saw a CD5 loaded with a japan-surplus B3 DOHC engine hanging in the engine bay like it belonged there! I am told it required very little massaging to get it in there and he had weber sidedrafts and tuned headers on it! I believe he shows up for drag races occasionally. Now that's what I have in mind! Cheers!
wow - thanks a lot greencar_project - you've been very helpful. one more query - will an lpg tank - with all its wiring fit into my cd5? trunk space can be an issue since the spare tire is in the rear beneath the trunk....
hanzel, the LPG tank I was looking at would be placed in the trunk of the GTX near the back of the rear seat....though it would take up some trunk space - it doesn't get in the way of the gas tank....but given the tight space in a hatch like the CD5 you would probably lose half your trunkspace
(sigh) - that is sad., loosing the trunk space is a big thing for a hatch - not to mention that the spare is under the trunk - if there was an lpg tank there - i wouldnt be able to get the spare tire out (if i needed to)....
It isn't all lost I'm sure, if you really want to u should see the installer and look at your options. By the way, do you know if the wheel bolt pattern of the Pride is similar to any other car that fits 14" rims?
hmmm. didnt take notice of the wheel bolt pattern, will take a look once i get the chanc. but one thing is for sure with our pride, that ours is one of the few cars wherein if you remove the wheel rim - you have to take out the lug nuts which also acts as the bolt. in other cars you take out the nut and the bolts are left in place, ergo if one bolt happens to snap - you have to change the wheel hub. if our lug nut / bolt snaps, methinks its easy to find in an auto surplus shop...

yup that's right. What we have are wheel studs, with the threads cut into the brake drum or disks. Problem with this system is that our Prides have very soft rear brake drums. One night my son had a flat tire and went to an all-night vulcanizing shop who tightened the bolts a bit too much (lasing ata) and stripped the threads with a half inch drive socket wrench! I had to replace the drum (P1,100 original brand new in Banawe) becuz no machine shop could re-thread it! Lungkot buhay
yikes., it hurts pala., gotta watch those vulcanizing guys when they tighten the wheel studs.
question - if and when my engine show signs of needing a general overhaul, which is more (a) practical or (b) cheaper - to buy a new engine or have the engine overhauled?
can i fit say a 1300cc kia gtx engine in my engine well? how is the consumption of the gtx? also, can i fit an automatic if and when i change engines?
The GTX engine is the B3 Mazda engine also fitted in the Familia 1.3 and the Ford Festiva. Yes, the B3 will fit into any B1 (1.1L) application. In fact I am told our Pride will take even the B5 and B6 engines from the 323 / Miata with some work! But I don't think we want to go there!
I don't know if you can still get surplus B1's at the local surplus shops but if you can't, it may in fact be more economical to do the overhaul, since parts are still easy to find for our engines. If more power is required, surplus B3/B5/B6 engines and their Japan market variants are still plentiful.
Any automatic transmission that will fit the B5/B6 engines from the Familia / Miata line will likewise fit the B3, so yes auto is available.
wow! you're really a great help bro! - are u still in cainta? am residing in Marikina - perhaps we can meet up one day and exchange notes. thanks for the reference url's, will check them out asap!
