Toyota Close to Becoming World's Largest
Toyota posts record profit, inches closer to GM
(Tokyo - AP, February 6, 2007) - In stark contrast to its U.S. based rivals, Toyota has reported record sales and net profit for the latest quarter.
With strong sales in the U.S. and Europe, Toyota is moving closer to surpassing General Motors as the world's largest automaker.
Sales of the Camry sedan and the remodeled RAV 4 sport utility vehicle in North America helped Toyota to post a net profit of $3.6 billion.
An analyst with Credit Suisse First Boston Securities in Tokyo calls Toyota's numbers "super strong."
The U.S. is a key, lucrative market for Toyota. Last year, it surpassed DaimlerChrysler to become No. 3 in the U.S. in terms of vehicles sold behind G.M. and Ford.
With its reputation for reliable, fuel-efficient cars, Toyota has gotten a boost from the rise in oil prices. It also is a leader in producing hybrids, which use electricity and gasoline.
