So here's how the story begins...

When I was younger (boy, I'm sure I will date some people with this) my mom took us to look at a car for herself. The Geo Metros had come out recently, and she was hoping to get one. Divorced and looking - it was rough. We didn't get it.

Fast foward to a few years ago and my mom is driving a second hand Geo Metro that belongs to my step dad's family. She was driving it up until today.

Skip ahead a few years...

My sister has been driving a 70's era "Boat" Chevy Impala. The car is in need of work, and she just doesn't make enough to do what needs to be done to it. She had found a deal here about 3 weeks ago, but the @#@#%#$ sold the car he was going to let her buy and "forgot" about her. He was going to take the Impala as a trade as well. Oh well, tough for him. :-P

In 2000, I purchased my first Kia - a 2001. They hadn't even been advertised locally yet, so I never even heard of it. It was pretty nice - 5 Speed Manual, Moon Roof, CD, etc. I drove that one up until Nov 2005. Traded it in and bought my current car - the 2004 Sorento in my forum image here.

My mom took my sister down to a friend's dealer in town here - well known, and reliable. She had seen a Maroon Kia there that she liked, and thought my sister would like it. The dealer even asked them what they thought of the Kias. (She laughed and told them about my good experience with my 01 Rio that I had just traded in to buy a Sorento since I liked the Rio so much, but wanted 4x4)

So she and my sister go down and start working on a deal for her. My mom needed to co-sign since my sister's credit was still being established. Since that was the deal, my mom had her eyes on one as well.

Skip to about 2 hours ago...

I'm out in the driveway about to move my sister's boat when she drives up. Busted. So I ask for a ride and we're out and about. Showed it off to our dad, and drove home.

So we pull up - and guess what's sitting in the driveway?

A 2005 Kia Rio. Black as night - same color as my current car, but the same model as the last one I owned. I nearly wet myself laughing.

So now, I own a 2004 Sorento, My sister owns a 2004 Optima, and my mom owns a 2005 Rio. The Optima had 34k, and the Rio had 12k.

We're now a full blown Kia family. ROFL.

Nice. I had a 04 Optima. Very nice car. Traded it in for the Sedona becasue I wanted something bigger.
The only Kias in my family are my two. I work with a few people that drive kias though.

That is funny, the same(almost)story here. In '01' my inlaws bought a used '00' Sportage. They drove it up to our house to show it off and we liked it so much we went down to the dealership they bought from and drove away in a '99' Sportage the same day. We love it, and it has given us some great cross country adventures and never once failed us.

Just a little update - you couldn't pry the Optima for my sister's not so dead cold fingers if you tried (she's a fighter - she won't die!) lol.

My mom is still smitten that she has a new car (the first time in like.. um... nearly 3 decades).

and I of course love my Sorento. It's a Beefy Kitten.

Guess we've "risen" out of Asia, only in Colorado... (China Syndrome is my guess!)

Good for your mum! I know exactly how she feels. I was driving around in beaters as my commuter for 14 years before I bought new this year.

Make sure you play the "good son" and be sure she keeps up on maintenance!
