Default Need advice, Sportage vs Rondo

I posted this in the Rondo forum but wanted to put this here as well, to be fair.

We are trying to decide on which vehicle we need for our family of 4 with 2 kids (in car seats for a while still) and one large dog. I feel like we are close to making a decision but thought I'd post on here to see if I am missing anything.

We have a larger vehicle that we can take on trips and haul everything that fits our whole family. This one is more for me, taking kids to school, soccer, hockey eventually I assume, etc. Mostly for driving in the city though we may like to take it on day or weekend trips.

What is important to me is safety and good visibility. I started out really liking the Soul for its cool design and being a top safety pick, then decided that the cargo area is just too small. Tried the new 2011 Sportage, hated the visibility. Tried the Rondo and thought it kind of bland. Tried a 2008 Sportage and loved how it drove and how it felt, liked the AWD option and that it sat a little higher. Tried a new Sorento to try to get everything in one package but decided that it was just too big. Just can't do a minivan.

We are also considering the Mitsubishi Outlander but I haven't driven one yet.
We looked closely at a Saturn Vue and found it not too bad.

So what it has mostly come down to is deciding between a 2008-2010 Sportage AWD V6 or a 2010 Rondo 7 seater EX-V6 luxury.

The Sportage has AWD and sits higher, the Rondo has extra seats in case we need it. I think they would be folded down except for if we have company and in the future if I need to haul some of my kid's friends. Also, I don't want to get stuck in the snow.

I am not thrilled with the safety ratings of either, (because they are not "perfect") but which do you think is safer? Sitting higher up in the Sportage? Though the rollover risk is greater and the roof strength is "Poor"?

The Rondo definitely has good visibility, almost too good. I'm not sure if I feel safe with all those big windows. I'm sure the kids would love to look out of them though.

I know the cargo area (with Rondo 3rd row down) is larger in cubic feet compared to the Sportage, but I'm thinking that it is because the Rondo is so much higher. What about the comparison of floor space in the cargo area of the two. Or "usable" cargo area. Is the Rondo still bigger in the back? I can't seem to find cargo area dimensions anywhere. (I'm going to test drive them both tomorrow and put them side by side to compare.)

Sorry for the long post but I think I put all my concerns in here. I'd appreciate any feedback!

Hi PrairieGirl,

I had a '07 Carens (Rondo) and now have an '08 Sportage. Both had the same CRDi engine and 6 speed M/T so I guess I can provide a comparison.

First, I liked my Carens but I love my Sportage. The Carens does have a bit more space (width and length) and a lower load level in the cargo area. It also has a bit more storage. However, I prefer the driving position in the Sportage and find the forward visibility better (less pillar intrusion). The European suspension is tuned differently but the Sportage actually corners better. The Sportage also has the rear hatch opening window (proves to be much more useful than I expected) and a fold flat front passanger seat (great for long loads). The Sportage interior is more robust too with plastic seat backs etc.

The clincher for me though was 4WD and better ground clearance.....I've decided I need both.

For me the Carens was competent transport and did all that it was asked to do except perform on snow & ice. The Sportage is simply more fun and I look forward to driving it everytime!

Thanks for your input. The Sportage is definitely nice to drive (the older ones- I didn't like the poor visibility in the 2011) but we went with the Rondo. The extra cargo space in the Rondo gave a bit more room for our dog, and the potential of using those 2 extra seats in the back were the main reasons for the choice. It was hard to pick. We would have loved to have more ground clearance and AWD. I get what you mean by the Sportage being more fun- but I guess practicality won out this time. Time will tell if we made the right choice for our family!

You're welcome. Good luck with your new car. It was the positive experience with the Carens that led me to the Sportage.

Im sure sportage owners that are happy with their sportages would say sportage. And rondo owners will say rondo.
Know what would be a lot easier? Go to the dealership, take both for a test drive and see what YOU like better.
Someone may like this one, that person might like this, but maybe you won't like either. Best to try them both for yourself.

Its all personal preference.
