Default Sportage Question

My sister in law has a 2002 Sportage. Yeterday on her way to work it simply died. When turning the key it will turn but not turn over enough tro start. I know nothing about Kia's so any help is definitely appreciated.

By the way, I am thinking it may be thee fuel filter. The positive cable on her battery was loose so I tightened it, that didn't help it start though.

One person she works with said it could be the timing chain. I am hoping that is not the case.

Thanks for any suggestions and help with this.

you didn't mentioned if the battery is still in good condition. i think the problem is the battery. It needs repacement already. I doubt it is timing chain, because if timing chain is the problem you'll hear different sound of the when you start the engine, but the problem is the battery coz it wont start.

How fast and hard is it cranking? Is it cranking like it normally does? Or is it slow and ponderous? If the latter, Carlos might be right if all of the connections between the frame, engine, starter and battery are sound. A poor connection can sometimes cause a starter to act like the battery isn't supplying enough juice.

If the former, check the ignition and the filter. Filters are cheap enough, so I might replace it out of hand. Also, that motor uses a timing belt and not a timing chain. You'd be better served checking the coil packs.

put the battery on charge and keep battery cables tight, with a loose positive cable the battery won,t charge so it could just have run flat. ........good luck.
