Question Engine specific to yr/model?

Long story short, my 2002 Kia Sportage ran hot, very hot, and it looks as if I will need a new engine (turns over, low compression, evidence of water in all but 1 cylinder). I have 2 options, buy new long block or buy used engine (2.0L DOHC). I'd like to price used engines. My question is: will an engine from another year and/or model fit, or must the used engine be from a 2002 Kia Sportage?

I don't know where you are shopping for the engine, but my experience is that if you get an engine from an auto salvage yard the manager of the yard usually knows what engines are swappable. Just to be on the safe side you might try two or three yards to be sure they agree. I hope you get if fixed quick, easy and economically.

I think using another year model engine will not suit your vehicle accurately like using 2006 model engine to replace your 2002 engine is somewhat different....It's still better to use the same model and year even if it is used engine rather than use new different engine....

any 2.0L sportage engine between the 1996-2002 year models will fit.

I don't know what state you live in, but states with California style emissions laws require same year or newer engines in any engine swap as well as same or smaller class vehicle (car engine into truck, but not truck engine into car). NY, for instance, doesn't even like engines from a different manufacturer swapped into a vehicle. You could swap a newer engine (beyond the model year range given above, but you would probably need the transmission swap as well as the bolt patterns would very likely be different on the bellhousing. After that, it's an easy swap.
