I have a 2000 kia sportage. Most days it starts and runs fine. It always cranks, but some days it doesn't turn over until the 6th or 12th, or 18th try. I have had the Fuel filter, fuel pump, plugs, and plug wires replaced. Recently the battery died and I had to replace it also, but I do not think that is related. The not turning over thing happens in the morning, in the afternoon, at night...Sometimes it will happen 3 times in a row, then it might go 2 weeks without any trouble. Just when I think I finally have it straitened out, it fails again. When I get it to start, and take it to a mechanic, he tries to start it and doesn't have any trouble. (what luck!)
have you looked at the shifter interlock switch,or if manual the cluch interlock switch
had a bronco 2 and it wouldnt turn over sometimes until i moved the shifter in and out of park a few times.the contacts where bad in the switch and wouldnt make good contact.
The issue has escalated. I was on my way to the grocery store and the thing just died. There was no warning. It did not spit or sputter, or jump or anything, the engine just died. I was waiting at a red light on a major highway here. I was lucky that it started back right away. I am not sure if this is an escalation of the sometime starting issue, or if this is an entirely new issue. It is frustrating and confusing though.
I got my groceries and was leaving the parking lot when it died again. I can't be driving a vehicle that I cant trust, so I have borrowed a car until I can get this one working.
Seriously though. These are great little beasties and I'd hate to see you give up on yours. I have compression problems with mine and it sounds to me like you had the same issue and it escalated. If it's still running, try changing the oil and see what that does for you. You may need to replace the coils (Don't ask. It's a lesson I learned with S10s and found it works here as well.) but that shouldn't be so bad. RockAuto.com has them listed from $20-$56 plus shipping.

I don't want to give up on it either, before it started this, it was a great vehicle. It is the best I have owned, but I guess that isn't saying much. The only other vehicles I have owned were a Ford Festiva, and a Geo Tracker.
I love my Sportage. But I think I am running out of options. I wouldn't have taken it to the KIA dealership if I hadn't had to. I have had so much stuff replaced on it that I had run out of ideas.
I have had the oil changed since the trouble started, about 3 times. I don't know what you mean by coils. Do you mean the ignition coils or something like that.
I actually took it back to the dealership, since they "guarantee" their work. They kept it for half a day and have called me telling me that the problem is now my battery.
I let them know that I replaced the battery less than 2 months ago, but they said that it isn't holding charge correctly. I get the feeling that they just don't want to help me anymore. I guess I will take it to Advance and have them use that little wheelie cart on it, see if KIA is just trying to get rid of me.
I hope they checked the alternator before they decided the trouble was the battery.

Neither one of them is a bad vehicle, just not what a lot of people consider cool. Trackers often get modified into quite capable trail rigs and rock crawlers. Saw one on hydraulics once.

Well, it's old enough that sometimes they will start nickel and diming you if the previous owner/s haven't taken proper care of it. I pulled parts off a 2000 Sporty the other day in a Pick'n'Pull in just about the same shape as the one I drive daily. Their loss, my gain.

Yes, I mean the ignition coils. Sometimes the excessive cranking and no fire will do bad things to ignition components. If you can, do a leak down test and see where your compression is at. All that cranking will cause blow by and force gasoline into the crankcase and under seals and stuff.

Sometimes it's like that. I've had day where I overlook the simple stuff simply because I was expecting a more complex problem. Then we get to the following:

Electricals are what I consider a 1% proposition. 99% of the time, you get varying degrees of longevity and quality of service from a part. But that 1% of the time, you get the part that fails almost immediately and for no apparent reason. I choose to leap blindly into this abyss while others try futilely to eliminate that 1%, much to their increased chance of stroke, heart attack or aneurysm.
Congratulations, Chaotic. You've just gotten your first lesson on the philosophical side of Auto maintenance and repair.
