Question Trouble Accelerating

Hello! I'm having problems with my 99 4x4 sportage. I originally had problems with rough idle etc. but now that those problems are taken care of I have a new problem.

We replaced the MAF sensor, fuel filter, battery, battery cables, starter (unrelated), pcv valve, spark plugs, wires, ignition coils, and valve cover gasket(leaking on spark plug).

Its running alot better however, the reason we started this wild goose chase is: after driving the kia for about 20 minutes, after it warms up, it has trouble taking off from idle. It's extremely sluggish, shakes the entire car, and has trouble accelerating. If you ease into it you can usually get it to pull out of it, and when you get it up to say 55 it has no problem, so it only happens in 1st and 2nd gear. When in park if you ease in to the gas when revving it, it is fine, but if you punch the gas it tops out at 3000 rpms and will go no higher.

We were researching possible catalytic converter, fuel pump issues but today we took it to a friend who is a mechanic and had a complete diagnostics run on it. It returned nothing. All sensors checked out etc. We also put Lucas fuel injector cleaner in. Then we took it to a muffler shop afterwards and had the exhaust checked, it had a newer catalytic coverter on it (we just bought it a year ago) and everything was fine. We are at our wits end. The mechanic could find nothing wrong with it except for a need to charge the a/c.

Also the fuel pump door had a striped bolt so they didnt open it and check it or the prefilter.

One strange thing... his computer returns that the egr valve is N/A. I thought for sure sportages had one but it says there shouldn't be one.

Where should we look next? timing belt, injectors, fuel pump? Thanks in advance for any help. - Kacy

my 99 sportage, started today with similar problems. If you discover what is wrong please post. I have changed out the fuel filter. Going to do the plugs tomorrow. It acts like it has bad fuel. Missing and bucking, etc. Some of the posts suggest the cat converter, and fuel pump relay.

We've eliminated both of those possibilities. Its more likely the fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator.

It was the fuel pump of course.
