problem with 2002 sportage

I took my sportage to the dealer and was told that it's the idle air control valve. They cleaned it but i still have a problem to start it. So i replaced the part but still have the same problem. I sometimes have to push down on the gas peddle and then with a little bit of luck it would start. Also sometimes i would have to wait a little and then it would start. Once it's running everything is fine until i shut it off and try to restart. After it's running a while and I shut it off and go to restart it wouLn't restart unless I let it sit awhile.Now can anyone out there help me with this.Thanks in adv.

Before doing a lot of expensive things, I'd suggest just doing several simple things and go from there. My 02 Conv has about 170k miles on it and one thing I have learned over the last 5+ years is that the 2.0 engine is very sensitive to the misbehavior of minor parts -- especially if more than one are starting to fail.

Therefore, in your case I would suggest spending $50 or so, along with a few hours of your time, and just change the following:

(1) Sparkplugs (gapable ones and set the gap to 0.030" -- not 0.040" or 0.044")
(2) Air Filter
(3) PCV Valve
(4) Fuel Filter

Note: except for the fuel filter, everything else is not difficult to access from the top of the engine... there is a recent post in this forum as to how to disconnect the two fuel filter connections -- down low on the frame on the intake manifold side.

just about 2 weeks ago we where coming back from a movie and the radio went dead then the car started sputtering but stopped when i turned the headlights off but the radio wouldn't come back on and it was raining so i could'nt even turn on the wipers if i did they went real slow so we just made it in town when the car just shut off so i had a friend jump me then i made it and the battery was dead. oh and the battey was only 3 months old so i got a new one put it in lasted a week i said dang can't be all bad so i took off the altenator took it to auto zone had it checked they said it was fine so i got another new battery it only lasted a week so i'm thinking it has to be the altenator because someone told me the test that autozone gives are not always right so i took it to o'reillys a man brought out a tester put it on my battery (the new one he put in they where all under warrenty) and he said the altenator is not giving enough current to charge. i said i just had it tested but he pointed out the test just said it was good but doesn't say if it putting out the right amount of volts to charge just that it's good.
i've checked the wires.
heres my question is the autozone alt test even worth haveing done
by the time this is read i will have had the new one put in (cross my fingers this is it)

well for the first guy i would say check the fuel and main relays under the hood they tend to stick when hot. they dont cost much and if you have to get the car strted just open the fuse cover and hit them with either the bottom of your fist or a screw driver or something like that. i might not be right but ive seen in in the 1st gen dportages at least 20 times in the last year
