Default 200 Sportage won't start -code P0343

(whoops - I missed a 0 on the thread subject. It's a 2000 Sportage)

I was driving my Sportage down a straight, smooth stretch of road at about 45 MPH when it suddenly lost power. No warning, the engine just stopped. I tried to start it again and it cranked, but it didn't even get close to running. Battery seems fine, it has over a quarter tank of gas.

I put an OBD scanner on it and it gave me a P0171 and a P0343. The P0171 has been around for about a year and hasn't seemed to affect the running of the car. The P0343 is new.

This car has previously slipped the timing belt twice and I think that maybe the same thing has happened again.

My questions:
1) Is there any easy way to determine if the timing belt has slipped (without tearing everything off the front of the engine )
2) Are there any other obvious things that could cause this?

Thanks!

could quite possibly be the crank sensor. I have a 97 model & i had the same problem. The sensor is located on top of gearbox bell housing

Philko

Just take all of the spark plugs out and run a compression test on each cylinder -- the values should be +/- 10% of each other... in the range of 160-190 psi.
