Default RPM's jumped past 4 while driving...

My car is a 99 sportage, with 154,000 miles on it. I have had it 2 yrs now.
Today while driving home going about 65mph, the rpms jumped up past the 4 w/o me pressing down on the gas. Just before it happened I thought the car kinda shimmied, thought it was a flat tire for a half a second, then I saw the rpm gauge at the 4. After that, nothing happened. When I restarted the car after a stop at a store, the check engine light came on. I don't know the code yet. Will go to the az to get it tomorrow.

History:
About 2 weeks ago, I took the car in because the check engine light would come on, stay on a few days then go off... only to repeat again about a week or so later. I would know the light was going to come on, because the RPMS would jump up when starting the car in the morning, and sure enough a short while later the light would come on.
The code was for the MAF / throttle position..etc. The shop found the trouble to be the throttle position sensor, replaced it and the car seemed fine... until yesterday.
After running for about 20 minutes, while idling at a light, the RPMs would dip. And then today it did the Surge in RPMs driving down the middle of the interstate!

Any help? Could it be the same throttle position issue? Or what?

Welcome to the forum.

It sounds like a sticky Idle Speed Control (ISC) valve.
This is normally quite easy to correct by cleaning it with carb cleaner.

Search for the ISC (sometimes referred to as IAC) on this forum and this web site.

Just to update, in case anyone else gets similar symptoms in their car.
Firestone, gave me my money back, and politely asked I not bring the car back. LOL. The third time I brought it back they could not find what was wrong and were guessing it was the computer.

I took it straight to the Kia dealership. Four days later...here's what they found. The battery cables were bad, the 02 sensor was bad, and two wiring harnesses were bad. So between parts and an estimated 12 hours of labor expected the quote was... $2500 to fix it!

And I already had an appointment to fix an oil leak and the AC, for an additional $1000.

So, obviously my little 99 Sportage with 154,000 miles on it was NOT worth $3500 worth of repairs. I drug it to CarMax, sold it to them for a whooping $250. Then I bought myself a Volvo.

Good luck Kia owners!
