My Kia Sportage 2001 can during a ride suddenly switch off. This happens very smoothly without any shocks. Does anyone recognize this problem? During a testdrive at garage it never happens of course. thx
I invested in an AutoXray 4000 Scanner. I know it sounds like a lot of money for a tool, but I believe it will pay for itself over time by correctly identifying these tricky electronic problems. It has a freeze frame function that lets you capture the state of the various sensors etc. at the time of the malfunction. Maybe you can rent, or borrow, something like this to help you determine what is happening at the instant that you car switches off. Another thought would be to buy one off eBay, use it and then put it back on eBay for sale.

I think that it may be a faulty fuel pump relay - this relay has a timer circuit in, which switches off the power to the fuel pump and a few other fuel system items when it no longer detects ignition pulses.
You could monitor the fuel rail pressure when the problem is present - you can also bypass the fuel pump relay using a jumper on the Diagnostic plug in the engine bay (B+ ~ PMP)
You may even consider temporarly attaching a pilot lamp to the fuel pump power to monitor if and when the fuel pump loses power.
If the engine is not overheating, then I wouldn't bother changing the thermostat - if the fuel system is in order then it will not get vapour locked.

He'd not indicated that he'd changed his fuel pump relay.
William Lee, I think that you are unfairly painting all Kia service centers with the same brush. I accept that you may have had a bad experience at your Kia service center, but can assure you that they are not all retards - find an alternate service center rather than picking at the problem.

My suggestions still stand for the original poster.
William Lee, why don't you start by best describing your symtoms and what you've tried, then I'm sure you'll find the guys here will offer sound advice.
I dont see how a service bulletin could help in this case, considering that the problem hasn't yet been identified, and it could be one of a number of causes.

On your above comments, I re-read this entire thread, and cannot find where the OP or you posted that the fuel pump relay had already been changed out.
I hope that the OP finds some use in my post.

From the way it sounds, your trouble might be in a faulty ignition switch.
I had the same problem with another vehicle sometime age and after changing the switch, the prob was fixed.
Just a thought.
