Default timing belt problems 2000 sportage

have a 2000 sportage that the timing belt cut a slot out all the way around the timing cover wtf is going on. as i got into it i have now noticed the crankshaft is out more than a 3/4 of an inch, can see the timing gear onthe crank and harmonic balancer are all out. does turn over, broken crankshaft?????? or is it time for the grave yard 135000 muiles.

Sounds like the belt has stretched with age, they need to be replaced every 5 years , or you run the risk of them breaking, or slipping a tooth etc!

Esay to fix just use the search function on this fourm, there is a nice detailed step by step article on how to change the belt on a 2000 sportage in the DIY section.
