From searching endlessly for repair procedures for my 96 sportage, as in the heater core repair, i happened upon Kia Motors America and just happened to click on kia owners, then service info, came up to GDS, then I clicked Tech Info and pointed to Shop. Here I found heaven for those of us who are looking for info on how to do this and do that, and where that is, and how to rewire this and that, how to repair and troubleshoot just about anything to do with the entire vehicle, how tight this bolt should be and how loose that other shouldnt. They have schematics and diagrams for everything. I found the info i needed and see that i have a task ahead of me, as i am doing this myself. with the help of a friend who has use of only one arm, the other is in a sling.
we will take pics as we go and if u want i can post them.
oh, and did i mention that my friend and i are women. i dont wanna hear any laughs out there. i once put together a 66 mustang from frame and to a working car over a summer so i know what i am doing!

I now know that the site I mentioned above is old news, but to me it wasnt and i was grateful for it. My Gf and I managed to take apart the dash and everything else to the removal of the heater core in 6 hours. to order the part and pick it up next day, to then putting in the new core and putting the car back together..5 hours later. with a turn of the key all the lights worked and i now have heat and i dont overheat. I am happy! My Gf and I are proud of ourselves for doing it on our own. Everyone said it would be a b*tch to do but it really wasnt all that bad.

The pics are of the empty space after removing the heater unit and the other is that nasty core!
