Assuming a first generation Sportage, sounds like a problem with the vehicle speed sensor on the back of the transfer case (4wd) or transmission extension housing (2wd).

Could be as simple as a corroded/broken wire, through to a malfunction in the sensor. Take it to Autozone and get the codes read and let us know what they are (to be absoluteluy sure...).

Realistically a 5 min fix (wire) or 1/2 hour tops to replace the VSS. Cost of a new VSS$??? but not more than $50 or so from a wreckers/breakers/junkyard.

It is located on the transmission extension housing, right at the back of the transmission. It should be the only electrical connection in that area so not to difficult to pick.

Before you go replacing it, try to clean the electrical contacts in the plug and socket by unplugging/replugging the connector together a few times. Area under there is subject to a lot of road dirt/salt/corrosion.

You could also try a wreckers/breakers/junkyard for a second hand one.
