Default 2000 Sportage. Newbie Question Regarding Distrobuter Wires

Hey all,

Im new to the Kia scene, but familar with cars in general. I do however have a newbie question.
My question is, how do i access the distrobuter wires as well as spark plugs? Im guessing i need to remove alot of components just to access what i need.

Also, whast the prefered brand of wires and plugs for these SUV's?

Thanks in advance.

I'm working on a 2000 Sportage right now and trying to find bolt torque specs. Anyway, the plugs, coils, and wires are down between the cam covers underneath a black plastic cover. You have to remove the aluminum air tube attached to the throttle body to get the cover off. Under the cover are two coils with wires. The coils sit on 1 & 3 plugs with a plug wire from each going to the adjacent 2 & 4 plugs. Don't forget to use Anti-Sieze on the new plugs going into that aluminum head - Iowapack

We don't actually have a distributor as you may have noticed, but the coil wires are under the plastic cover. You do have to remove a bit (straightforward disassembly) to get to it all, though.

A warning NOT to use Bosch +4 plugs. There have been several instances where these have caused misfiring. If the plugs are being done for the first time you will also need a steel rocker cover gasket available from Kia service) to replace the paper one (they do not sell paper replacement ones, and you really do not want to diassemble everything to change a dodgy home made effort). A good idea to do everything, plugs, leads, and coils in the one hit to avoid any hassles later on.

Hi guys,

Thats for the replies. I really appreciate it. Being from the UK and now living in the USA, i havent really looked nor tinkered with an SUV engine. Im just too used to my 4 cylinder engines.

Is there any online tear down manuals for the Kia's anywhere? or even Haynes manuals?

Thanks again

GDS

Official Kia Online Manual (via "Shop" on the left hand side after free registration, may need appropriate Adobe viewer). They do expect some mechanical knowledge (aimed at their in house mechanics)
