Flashing check engine light in my '99

When I start going in my sportage, my engine makes a loud clicking noise. My check engine light is on constantly but when I get on the gas, the check engine light flashes. Why is this? I've never seen this. Is my engine going? I hope so, because it doesn't like to go above 40 mph. -also I get 13 miles to the gallon. -thanks for any help.

Take it to Autozone if you are in the US and they will read the error codes. Come back to us with a list of codes (the numbers will be in a Pxxxx format with x being a digit) and we should be able to help, or at least point you in the right direction.

It does sound prety serious given the description, and apart from driving to Autozone to get the codes read, I wouldn't drive it too much further to reduce any further damage to the engine.

Have you done the basic things like checking the oil and radiator fluid?
