Default My wife is looking at a 2013 Kia Soul

Seems like a good car for the money.... but... I'm a little concerned about this 100,000 powertrain warranty and what it covers. Or doesn't cover.

My main concern is based on a nightmare story from a neighbor who had a Kia with a broken timing belt and a destroyed engine. Kia refused to pay for repairs because the timing belt wasn't changed per maint. sched. Fair enough, I guess.

Just something to worry about.

The salesman tells my wife the Kia Soul no longer uses a "timing belt"... OK

But I see "drive belt" in the maint schedule...... is that the same thing under a different name? I don't see any mileage requirement but I DO see a requirement for inspection.

So if this belt give out can the engine be ruined? Will the warranty be void if it wasn't "inspected"?

A cursory google search shows up loads of complaints regarding the timing belt and lack of warranty support.

Is this something to worry about currently?

no, it uses a chain. I don't know which model you are looking at but the 2012 2.0L was the first year with the chain. The 1.6L always had a chain. The 2.0L engine which was new for 2012 is called the Nu series. There is now no new KIA's sold in the US that uses a timing belt.

The Drive belt is not the timing chain. It drives components on the passengers side of the engine just like on all vehicles, but the belt is shorter now the power steering is electric driven. This is an inspection first at 60,000 miles or 72 months and then every 15,000 miles or 24 months after that. It states the drive belt should be replaced when cracks occur or tension is reduced excessively. Not sure what you were looking at that information is all there in the maintenance schedule section of the owners manual (this is from the 2013 Soul Owners Manual for the US).

This drive belt. Will a failure of that belt ruin an engine?

Just trying to understand these new fangled engines. In my day, if a belt broke, you replaced it. You didn't have to replace your engine.

NO...
It is used to drive the accessories like the AC/Alternator/etc..
This is the third "update" on an original Mazda engine design..
thus the "theta" name. If you maintain them they can easily go 300k miles.
The "beta" version is used in the Spectras 2004.5~2009.. Very reliable proven design as well as the transmissions.

Just keep your receipts and dates if any work was done "outside" of the dealership.. (like oil changes, lubrication,etc..) KIA will work with you "if" you have these...
