Another mileage update.....Yeah, I know this thread ought to die, but I decided to scrap the additive testing (it wasn't doing squat), and try 04sorento's advice with the higher octane fuel. I just finished a tank of Chevron 89 octane (mid-grade) doing my usual route to work and about town a bit, and got 31.6 mpg!!!!! Yeah, luck is what I am thinking, but I filled er up again tonight, and will try another tank just to see if it was a fluke. The mid grade is 9-11 cents a gallon more than 87 , so a 10 gallon refill costs $.90-1.10 more. And I got 316 miles on 9.96gallons. I previously got 28 mpg which is 280 miles on 10 gallons. So that extra dollars worth of better fuel got me 36 extra miles. Looks like 04sorento may have something legit in all his ravings about fuel tiers.
Oh, and car drove EXACTLY the same as it always has...no changes I could feel.

Oh, I am skeptical, but the numbers didn't lie... surprised the heck out of me. I'll try a couple more tanks worth and let the jury decide.

okay...decided to wait a few and not post each and every tank, but I am on my 3rd tank (since last post), and the better grade fuels are working so far. 1 tank was Sam's Club Premium (they don't have a mid-grade) 91 octane. Got just a hair over 30mpg that tank.
Next was a tank of 89 octane Union 76 gas....and that also was just a smidge above 30 mpg. This current tank, I went back to chevron 89 and am averaging 32 mph after 3 days. All these mid geade and premium tanks of gas got me (and are getting me) better economy than I got buying the lowest grade. The other thing I just realized was I have not had ANY rough idle "moments" during these tanks. Could it be the fuel quality is making it run better? Hmmm... I am going to have to recommend anyone with an occasional rough idle, might try upgrading their fuel and see if it helps them. And just in case someone hasn't been following this thread lately, my Soul has no mods, standard tires, 33psi, and I do NOT use the ECO button. (well I have... but find it offensive, so don't).

Would someone please close this thread so I am not tempted to post more???

Hi Kevster my name is Clarie Voient nice to meet you. As for the RM93 at my SAMS CLUB and the fact that they only have that and RM87 offered. That is not a problem for me when i do use them as well. It is simple and a neat trick I am goingto tel you about. Use SAMS. But

1) look at you gase gauge and estimate form past waht it should take to fill tank. If that is as it was yesterday for me whcih was a rare occation. It was 10-10.5 gals by guessimate.
2) took that and divided it fast and got 5 RM87 and 5 RM93 ok.
3) started pump and hit RM87 and watched and put in a hair over 4 or 4.005.
4) ended sale got recipt
5) restarted pump hit RM93 and put in and filled tank with 6.951.
6) ended sale got recipt
7) that is now 10.956 gals of blended fuel which should be @ RM90. add more RM87 next time get RM89? add more RM93 get RM91?

All the math is simple really.

87+93=90
87+91=89

Play with ratio one to the other and you get waht you like that way if RM89 is not offered.

This is JUST what teh principle of the SUNOCO BLEND AT THE PUMP is all about but done for you there. They do not have five tanks for five grades sold. They have two and blend to grade for there at pump to get what you asked for.

We purchased out 2.0l, Kia Soul +, on 1/28/12, with 33 dealership miles on the odometer. We have no way of knowing just what type of driving they did at the dealership or if the ECO system was used at all during that time. We just got gas last night, with 286 miles on the odometer and the ECO system not turned on for any of that mileage by us. The driving on our part was virtually 99% city driving and 1% highway. Lots of stop and go traffic during the experience. At this first fill up, we added 10.896 galons of 87 Octane to fill the car up. The gas light had just come on before we got to the gas station to fill. Price was $3.99.9 per gallon here, yesterday. 26.248 was our mpg, but by using the ECO and also going to a higher mid-grade octane, plus just the normal break in, we expect to do better in the near future. My wife has a heavy foot most of the time, so that driving habit can contribute, but I just read the octane sugesstion, so we will do our second fillup with the 67 Octane we put in. Our 3rd will go to the mid-grade one in the future. My wife does most all of the driving on this car, so we will see what happens before we settle into believing we have hit a good average for the mpg on this car. This is a 2.0 l Soul +, with no special mods to anything that should effect gas mileage. We have a longer trip planned by midweek, so maybe we can see how much of an improvement we see in the 2nd tank of gas, when we know about all the miles we put on the car and we get in some actual long distance highway miles, too. Hoping to see some improvements.

The more expensive gas will not get you better gas mileage. It will lighten your wallet slightly though.

I've tried high octane fuel (Shell V-Power 98 RON) with a definite improvement over low octane (Shell 91 RON). The gain is about 2 MPG for highway driving, and yes, I did drive the same and took careful measurements. No, It doesn't compensate for the extra cost.

It is said that V-Power has a higher density than standard fuel, and that may partly explain the difference. Modern engines with knock sensors can probably get more power from higher octane fuels.

By the way: Our pumps will also deliver 95 RON, but I've found that it's cheaper to mix the appropriate amounts of 98/91 (most pumps will allow 2 shots).

Sometimes it will, but don't use the premium (most expensive) fuel. Only use the mid grade. (typically 89 octane). It is about 9 cents a gallon more. Wow, a ten gallon fillup costs a buck. I see a definite mpg improvement, and have done at least 5 tanks now... I didn't believe it either, till I tried it.

Thank you Kevster. You have just proven what I was saying all along for me. And BTW "the car driving better" is a sometimes intangable thing. It is NOT road fell better, thou yes if the car runs better it might give you personally a better driving experiene. But really "Driving Better" is running smoother and less like as you SAW stumbling or shake or random misfire. And yes it will tend to keep the INJECTORS cleaner and quieter too no or less TICKS! and KEEP IT THAT WAY for long term running better and less hassle with NEW PLUGS! and in time greater FUEL FILTER LIFE. So yes it WILL be CHEAPER TO RUN in long run over time. You will not get instant gratifacation like some here seem to DEMAND wrongly. So you now see the wizdom in my words. Even thou SOME seem to think "I ramble". My past job demanded I be redundent to a fault with public to stop the bad rumors and FALSE crap going around by the DOUBTERS at times like here. SO Yes I seem to ramble (trying to fully explain to brain dead types with CLOSED MINDS to just listen and try things first, condem later if you do not like rsults YOU got and not fully what EVERYONE ELSE did when jumping off bridge like lemmins. Again ALL makers have a vested interest in making you need SERVICE not prolong it, like we ALL try to do for ecom reasons. Small things add up big time in long run. Remember what your mother used to say? IF eveyone was jumping off a bridge would you too? Yes maybe if your bungee jumping , but not really always if that is what everyone tells you is the ONLY way to get off the bridge, and THAT is the EXIT RAMP. But rarely am I "FULL OF CRAP"
Take care and hopeflly you will be very happy onward. And try the blending at SAMS or anywhere else, if you can not find RM89. it is not hard as you will find out to do so really. Nobody needs a college degree in SCIENCE to do it. Just have to have passed basic 4th grade math class. If you can be a bartender or make a mixed drink at home you can do this too.
