This is my first post so I would like to say hi to all the members here.
My wife and I are looking to buy my daughter her first car and she loves the kia soul.
My dilemma is this: We have found a 2010 sport model with 168,000 miles as the previous owner was a insurance adjuster and drove many miles for work each day on the freeway. Although it has been verified that the oil was regularly changed. The car is about what I would call a 7 out of 10 as far as condition. The seller is willing to replace the timing belt and tensioners along with the water pump.
He wants $7,400 for the car. This fits what we are looking to spend.
Should I run from a car with this many miles?
Thank you
$7400 is NOT the right price. And while there may still be a few miles left in 'er, there may also be repairs and expenditures common to high mileage vehicles which lead to inconvenience being without the car and/or possible stranding your daughter when thy occur.
Wouldn't it be better to shop around and try to find something with less miles even if you have to pay a bit more for the reliability and peace-of-mind factor? :auto:
You better buy an older car with less mileage.
I once bought a 10 year old Corolla with 90K miles that drove until it rusted. Engine was perfect but the body was falling apart.
Try to buy something that's 65K miles or less if possible. As the car ages, you will have to change belts, exhaust parts, ...
No way. This car was always on the road. Your asking for a load of problems. Walk away from this auto. I know your daughter is turning up the heat, but a good auto is more than a pretty face.
A couple of years back I sold our 2007 KIA Spectra EX with 21K for $7500. It was in like new condition, had had its timing belt done, ATF, PS & PB fluid and had a new set of Michelin Defenders.
You can do better than this.
OP hasn't been around since August 12 so I presume that's the last we've heard from him.
There's a street fleet couriers 2010 soul that comes to our dealer for service and had 348,000 miles last time it was in. No engine issues, just maintenance and a wheel bearing. I'm not saying you won't see problems with that one, just saying if u take care of it, it will go for a very long time. But I would agree that is a little too high of an asking price. Try to get him down a grand.
This is a bit of miles for any car without a warranty. You would be better of lokking at the 2012 2013 around here they go for abot 7500 to 8000 figure 12000 or less per year for a figure and then see how much of 175 000 to 200,000 is left You are probably only going to get around 175 to 200 out of an engine without big problems and it sounds like if te dealer is going to "FIX" the problem there may be more wrong . I love my Soul So I like the car but I would be looking at 2013 and above . and or less then 100,000 miles
There are alot around.
I disagree with most of YOU.Miles on a car is not an issue if the car was maintained.EXAMPLE...the Soul with 348K on it.Sure...You would have to change some belts...do another oil change...take it to a reputal dealer...have the engine scoped. If all checks out...consider the car.
In my opinion...the price is a bit to high.I'd offer $6500...if he agreed to a timing belt replacement.I believe there's another 150K left in that car.
Guys...
You might want to check out the dates of the original poster...It's been 5 months since the first post and he probably has moved on...
As far as KIA/Hyundai drive trains are concerned...If you do a proper physical and maintenance check on them and they come back clean (no sludge in the engine, fluids changed at regular intervals) I would not be afraid of purchasing one with over 100k miles... I have seen posts on RIOs coming up on 300k and Spectras with 348k miles on them and still running strong... The days of the "throw away" Korean cars are long gone and they are "on par" with any of the Japanese vehicles today... My 06 Spectra (was salvage) has a very low 48k miles on it and NO RUST or reliability problems... My wife's 07 Spectra with close to 80k runs like a new car and is physically perfect...
You will find many members here that love their KIAs or Hyundais and will attest to their long life... Both manufacturers use the same reliable drive trains.

In feb or mar 13 I got a 2010 + with 60k miles mines around 80k miles now had a few accidents still has a couple stains the dealer couldn't bother getting out dealer also called a trans flush a "waste of money" and the timing belt was never changed
How do you verify oil changes? I know I'm maintaining I also know I never got a carfax was repeatedly told "1 owner that's good" so I really only know that I have
I also know it sat on there lot 8 months "but the oil is fine to the mileage" or as much when they have a 3 month cycle thus far no unexpected things to pop up with mine but I know I'm not going back there
Correction: 3 month my current place a Toyota dealer uses a 6 month cycle
With +60k miles on the car when you bought it as a second owner your Warranties are gone... (10yr/100k on original owner, 60k drive train on second owner)...so the oil change history is not needed...
BUT...
what is needed changing is the timing belt!!! You are dangerously close to trashing your engine... Most 2010 2.0L engines (also used in the Spectra 2004.5~2009) fail with 86k miles on the timing belt... Later Souls use a revised 2.0L that does have a timing chain...Yours doesn't...
The automatic transmission coupled to this engine should have the fluid drained and refilled every 30k miles and you must ONLY use a "Diamond III" type fluid like the Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic... read the back of the bottle to insure that spec is met.
This tranny was designed by Ford/Mazda/Mitsubishi and tends to shed metal particles and friction material. The fluid can turn to a "goo" because of this... and failure will result...
The spark plugs also should be replaced at your mileage (80k)...Use either NGK or Denso plugs... NO Special "high performance" plugs!! They can cause misfires in KIAs.
Antifreeze will probably need replaced also.
Keeping the fluids and timing belt and water pumps replaced per the owner's manual and the car can go +300k miles...
I run Valvoline FULL synthetic, KIA/Hyundai oil filters, in my family's KIAs and Hyundais and they have been the BEST cars we have ever owned (I'm 65 and owned many cars)
