Default 4 X4 lube

Previously, I have had 2 4Runners (99 &02) which both owners mannuals recommended once a month engaging the 4 wheel drive system for approx 10 miles to lube the 4X4 system (keeping seals, gears, etc lubed).

I don't find anything in the owners manual for my 05 Sorie that recommends anything about engaging the 4X4 system on a recommended basis.

Anyone got the answer about this? With my 2000 Sportage it did not recommend engaging the 4X4 unless you were off road.

Thou it is not bad idea. And it will do just what you say they say. My 88 SR5 V6 4x4 pickup did not say to drive 10 miles. Nor every month. Thou it might have said to do that when not in use for long summer time periods or no real off road use ever. Most times if you use it for even light snow/ice winter raods it is fine. Like you found they said not to drive on dry pavement in 4wd. 10 miles on dry road would break things fast in a toyota. Lucky if you get a mile. So it is really hard to find a 10 mile dirt road for most to drive on and do this. I always just found a nice short road or even one by teh beach that was sandy but not on the beach sandy. And drove in 4wd for 1000 feet or more if you got it. 10 feet is too short and better then nothing, but 1000 feet is more then enough.
And I am sure over the years you like me has found not all manuals are great with details. And switching car makers alot is worse. AS you might get used to what GM normally tells you and does not for your last four cars. Only to look in the new Honda you jsut got manual and see much more or much less commen sense issues addressed.

With any 4wd the old Cannons are always the best.

Put in 4wd once in awhile to lube things if you never see snow or sand and use it.
Do not drive on dry pavement with a PART TIME 4wd system. But it is ok with a AWD/Full Time System. Just do not use the diff locks(Frt/Cnt/R) if you got them or they are not auto and are selectable to deactivated them. That last one should keep Pistn and his ROVER's out of everyones hair.

See I did not critize him. I just beat him to the punch is all now.
