Default 2005 sorento crank bolt fail

Was on vacation, powersteering let go, two lights in dash lit up. Pulled over and opened hood. Saw crank pulley and belt came completly off. Had it towed to KIA garage. My two infants did not appreciate that too much. Tech at Kia said the crank bolt broke causing pistons and valves to warp. Need new engine $5000.00. Engine has 101,000 kms on it and KIA Canada said Warranty ends at 100,000 kms. They refuse to pay for bill. Saw some other posts where this bolt has been known to be defective. Also, timing belt had been replaced at 95,000 kms. Any suggestions?

When the belt was changed at 95000 they are told by kia to use a new bolt ..so check that .
Second the bolt brakes because the aux belts are too tight ...oldbolt + overtight belt equals your problem .

not sure on age but there was a recall on the bolt ..did you have it done/should dealer have called you in?

three if the pulley came off but the cam drive toothed cog did not it could not have damaged the pistons...did it run OK ( you say you pulled over so it sounds like it was still running ) or did it make violent ENGINE noise with instant stop when the bolt broke. You could get an indepentend auto engineer to look at it ..sorry I am too far away to give you a report ...

I see it is your first post ...unfortunaltly if you had been looking on here earlier you would have had this checked out at 95000

I think you have a case against the garage who did the belt change ..check your bill for a new bolt ...did you pick up the bits ...whats the colour of the old bolt ?

I pretty much agree with pston. Dealer if you had the work done there should be covering this whole thing. For the following reasons. IF work done elsewhere then your flying solo other then the fact that a RECALL is a RECALL and subject ot no time/mileage at all clause. Recall is to be done on any vech weather it has 1 month/1000 or 100/1,000,000 on it. But only once. Unless the part that is replaced is found to be defective. You might come under this too.

1)T/B done and when such NEW bolt is used HENSE new bolt was in when they did it. If dealer did put back new design bolt it is thier dime for workmanship. As the new bolt was in 6000 miles.

2) New bolt was not put in ever. Same applies it is the dealers dime as they never notified you of recall. And it was never done at T/B service.

3) A recall is a recall plain and simple.

Only one way you should and can take the blame and bill for this. And that is if you GOT the recall notice and were too lazy to get it done or lazy in being a pain in the ass to dealer you get the vech in to be done in a year. They telling you we can not get you in till next week and you never following up cause that was not fitting into your plans and schedule now makes it your engine and bill. Even if you did not get it done but had appointment to have it done in a timely manner form first date of notice to you and it let loose it is thier dime.

Thanks for the input guys. I never got a recall letter concerning this bolt. I live in Canada. I was on vacation in the U.S., and as for the damage, I pulled over to see, then the truck did not start after, gave me like a hissing noise when trying to start. At the garage they showed me the pistons and valves, I'm no mechanic but they looked quite bent. They also showed me the bolt and it was gold in color, like the defective one. If at 95000 km when they had changed my timing belt , wouldn't they install a grey or silver one? Also never saw any bolt replacement on the bill. KIA Canada is not anwering my calls or mail. I don't know what to do. Total loss was a new engine $5,000 and hotel (2) nights $300 and car rental $75.00. Also had to call my friend to pick me up as they restrict rental cars going over the border. Now I have to return to U.S. to pick up my truck next week.

you need to persue the people who changed the belt but not the bolt as per KIA directive..

Could go either way pston. He has yet to tell us whom did the T/B. Nor if the vech was ever in a dealer where they could have told him. Seeing as he never got notice that bolt recall was a critical one, and that needs to be done now. If it was in a dealer after the recall date of notice, they dropped the ball.
IF dealer did T/B then they should have put in new design bolt. IF they did not then it is dealers dime. If dealer did put back the new one, then it is as I see here a few times a defective recall part. And again dealer dime. Also as you so well put the acces belts need to be at min tension. If dealer over tighten them then yes it is again dealer dime.
IF anyone other then a dealer did the work then he is on his own. As they may or may not stand behind thier work. And not have known about teh problems and try and wash hands form it and get away form this vech as far and fast as possible. NOT RIGHT, but true fact of life. He might have to find a barrister.

Did all my vehicle maintenance at my dealer. Did not receive any bolt recall letter. Timing belt was replaced at 95,000 kms. How could you tell if the belts were too tight? The motor is presently in pieces, at a U.S. KIA dealer. They are saving the bolt for me so I can show that to my dealer. Would there be a recall for this bolt in U.S. and not Canada?

If you had everything done at your dealer it wont matter. The recall should be covered by any dealer and also the engine repair.
