I am due for new tires on my 2005 Sorento. I am shopping for tires and getting no where. I live in Pa and have some snow but most of my driving is on dry or wet roads. The orginal Michelin tires that were standard are ''junk'', in my opion. Does anyone have any suggestions from experience ?
Yes you are correct the OEM Michelins are junk and Michelin admits that the OEM tires are not the same quality as the after market Cross Terrains. I looked around and bought a set of Goodyear Fortera Triple Treds. I asked several that used the tire and they told me that traction on wet and snow covered roads was beyond compare. But, there is a down side to these tires, they are pricey. I paid $763 for a set of the Goodyear's but it is the last set of tires I plan to purchase for the Sorento. Hope this helps,
KUHMO makes several thread versions of value priced tires. All with very good marks form those whom bought them. But like the other guy said the GOODYEAR tires are good but $$$$ at $763 for a set. Do not forget that if you get a set of KUHMO's for $500-550 and they do not last 80,000 like the Goodyears say they will but do not. The Goodyears are real world more like 65-70,000 if lucky. And the KUHMO's only last 50-55,000 maybe more with luck. You paid $500-550 not $763. That $213-263 can go a long way to paying for HALF or more of the new second(vech's third set) set of KUHMO's right?
Where did you get the tread life figures for the Goodyears? My dealer told me to expect 60,000 miles, and do the Kuhmos compare to the Forteras on wet and snowy roads? I will admit the tires are more than this vehicle deserves, really the Kia is Cooper quality and that is an insult to Cooper. And I checked KBB the other night and found the average trade on this 05 Sorento with 41,000 was a hefty $9,777. It was a day of weakness for me when I signed the loan for this thing. My 1996 Mazda (Ford built) pickup has 148,000 on the clock and will fetch me 26 mpg on the highway, and has never failed nor been returned to the dealer for a recall or a campaign(the Kia 3 times). As you can tell I have not been impressed with Kia, to me it is a Lexus wannabe, but then again it is not my ride and buying it put the old lady in mute mode.
sorento7 - I got 67,000 miles from my OE Michelin Cross Terrain tires, with good service and stable balance throughout their life. Might have made 70k, but the rainy season was coming and my wife is the daily driver if the sorento. replaced them with a set of kuhmo road ventures and have been very happy with them for 20,000 miles. the Kuhmos are very stable in the rain and are quieter than the OE michelins in the dry. IMHO, stay away from the Kuhmo 798's just because of load range and the Sorento is a heavy beast. The higher load range will serve you better.
kwalkman - the kuhmos were within 1/2 point of the Forterras, and a substantial savings. I had my Kuhmos installed and a 4 wheel alignment for $475. Sorry you don't like the vehicle you bought - better stick with the Fozda - they were good trucks. I'll park the Sorento next to a Lexus any day and enjoy the money I didn't spend. If you plan to keep the vehicle for a while, don't sweat the KBB value - Vehix.com could be higher anyway.

I bought a '04 EX a few months ago and they came with new Michelin LTX M/S tires. Are these the junk OEM tires you are referring to? They seem pretty good to me, but I'm new to SUV scene and haven't tried them in the winter yet.

I got the Kuhmo 798 and have 20,000 miles on them ...they will be lucky to reach 30.000 so it would be nice to know what make is a high milage tyre ...stay off these I think ....???
The LTX M&S is a good tire with a proven design that has been around for years in the US. The "junk" tire was the Cross Terrain, but I had pretty good service from it - 67,000 miles on an SUV tire is not bad IMHO
MY 04 came with the Kumho 798's. I now have 38000 miles on them and they are probably good for another 5-10K. I didn't think they would last so long.
