gray bolts break just as easy as the gold ones (Kia lies !)
500 miles after your engine injested a screw and presumably had to be stripped? Coincidence?

i saw the bolt, it broke at the threads. appx 500 miles after the complete engine was replaced (long block) when the intake system failed

the bolt and related parts were replaced by another dealer, of course the first dealer claimed to have done all the work as per kia shop manual instructions by tarined technicians when i call then to give them my thoughts their 'worst service dept in the USA'

Default Crankshaft Bolt Problem

I need help. I carried my 2003 Sorento (50k Mile) in for the crankshaft bolt recall and it was supposed to take 1 hr. The dealership went to back the bolt out and it wouldn't go any further. It stopped and they didn't want to force it so they called the Kia Rep to let him know what the situation was. If the bolt breaks, then they will have to put a new engine in. The rep told them they have to try and get it out. Well, it breaks. They have treated me pretty good and tried to make it right. They are going to put a new small block in with a new bolt. I told them to go ahead and change the timing belt, water pump, and other belts since I will only have to pay for parts. The question I have is will the new small block with the new crankshaft pulley be revised and be any improvements or should I try and get this thing paid for and trade? Will I still face the new bolt breaking? I was hoping I may come out a little better by getting a new block instead of just the bolt. Any comments appreciated. Any law suits down the road against KIA? This is pretty serious for people who bought these.

Even the new bolt will break if the accessory belts are tightened too hard.

Unfortunately, ther are no improvements in that area. New design is on 3.8L engine. But Sedona has different design of the crankshaft and the pulley for 3.5 L engine(which you have).
It is up to you - to trade or not, you'll hear different opinions on that.

Actually, I'm suprised that dealership won't try to drill the bolt out. But who am I to judge . There are people who did it in the middle of nowhere.

The dealer where i live actually drilled it out and replaced it at a minimum cost because it happened just after the major service.

I'm sure if it happened long after the major service, they would have insisted on doing a big costly job.

Default Crankshaft Bolt

Has there been a lot of instances here that the new bolt doesn't hold up well if torqued right and belts tightened like there supposed to be according to the recall?

I doubt if anyone outside of Kia knows the answer to that. Which I think was the purpose of this thread - to find out information from owners. 'a lot'? In reallity I don't think so. 'more than there should be'? almost certainly in terms of number of failures, but whether those failures were in 'correctly torqued, correctly adjusted' circumstances who knows?

Finally got my bolt replaced..crossing fingers it all holds together.

Funny thing is I've been waiting 2 months for the dealer to get the bolt in..instead of having to keep waiting the dealer ordered the part under my name because he said that should speed up delivery...sure enough the bolt arrived a week after I ordered it.

Default Crossing my fingers everytime I crank it up

1. Sorento Model: 2005
2. Type of Bolt (Gold/Gray) : Gray
3. Speedo in Km/Miles the Bolt Broke 1st Time : 15,000 m
4. Schedule Maintenance before breakage: 12,000 m
5. Current Speedo Reading Km/Miles : 30,000 m

On my second engine and check engine light just came back on today. Hoping it's not the Intake, but it's suspicious. Dealer has done every repair without hassles....only thing I've been out a pocket on is alternate transportation.
