Default Black Smoke

Recently my 2005 CRD started to belch black smoke and lose power. It only happens when the engine is hot. The black smoke is really thick, and comes out in clouds I can see in the rear view mirror. Like this when climbing hills, accelerating on highway from trailing throttle, or just overtaking. The idle is smooth, no strange noises, everything else sounds fine. The loss of power is annoying, as is the black smoke. If accelerating gently from standstill all the way up the redline,....no smoke, or not as much.
The Hi Scan at the dealer showing no fault codes for any of suspect components, ie injectors, fuel pump etc...... The air filter is clean, and I cannot find any restrictions on the air intake system. I am ruuning the engine on Caltex Delo 400, and the mileage is 14000km. Suggestions so far vary from wrong oil(?), poor quality fuel,... to EGR stuck open when the engine is hot. I thought black smoke normally result of incomplete combustion. When the engine is cold the car is running fine, no black smoke, when it's hot, like it's being choked. Any one got any ideas as to other poss. cause?

Well oil burns bluey white..so its not the oil. Black smoke could be dodgy injector spray pattern, dodgy injection pump..overfuelling (Scary££) or an air problem (more likely too little than too much). Or an ECU giving wrong mixture instructions.

I'm not a diesel expert at all I hasten to add, but as i took delivery of an 04 Sorento TD on friday..its time I started learning I suppose

Not knowing anything or having seen a kia diesel but having a good knowledge of diesels that would explain the low power and black smoke.

Who makes the engine and what turbo is used? Do these diesel versions come with guages? Boost,Egt and fuel pressure. Who makes the common rail injector pump, Bosch?
I really wish a diesel option was available in the US. Time to go searching for info.

hi junkie, well the engine is made by Kia, to a Mazda design, or is it made by Mazda and modified by KIA, one or the other.... Dunno who makes the turbo, but it looks likes a garret design. There are no boost guages and the common rail is from Bosch.
The Kia CRD is a really cool car, esp if you get the ECU tuned up!
