we have a 04 with almost 90k now. at 30k i changed both gearbox and diff with redline synthetic with good results. the service writer did question which fluid i used when i told him i had it changed somewhere else. he did mention that kia really likes its own fluid, but didnt think it would be an issue. the way i see it is this, i use reldine in my M3 track car and my 911. both of these cars have a much more expensive gearbox and the M3 gets abused all the time, if the fluid is ok for these cars, it is fine for the kia. remember, kia has to prove that the fluid did some sort of damage. i also go 10k between oil changes with mobil 1.
bmwbevins: I am not disputing your claims of the redline fluid. If it's working for you thats great. Your comment that the service writer made "that kia really likes its own fluid, but didn't think it would be an issue." was probably said when there was no problems. Wait, God forbid, you have one later, and see if his tone doen't change. And Kia only has to deny the claim and when that happens you the consumer will be the one to do the footwork and/or paperwork to prove your choice of fluid is proper. Kia is not going to go out of their way to do you the consumer any favors when it comes to a $1000-$2000-$3000 repair. Your M3 track car and 911 may be designed to accept the different fluid. If Kias warranty states a certain fluid or it's equivelant then they will deny it at first. Then it's court time. Sometimes legal fees exceed that of the repair and time lost. I know this all sounds like paranoia but I have been partly down this path. Keep all your records and proof just in case. Thanks for reading.
Lets not get carried away fellas Firstly bmwbevins has an 04, so presumably a 4 speed trans - hence the Kia Red 1 does not figure in the equation. But then, neither does bmwbevins specify which grade of Redline he is using, so anything is possible as they have several grades for different applications. If it is the Synthetic D4 ATF that should be a direct substitute for Dexron III.
well, at this point the redline has been in the car much longer than the oe fluid. if a problem were to arise, i feel it would have happened by now. i have owned 25+ cars, and have only had 1 gearbox issue, and that was in a fiero, which is known for weak clutch/tranny. i am not paranoid, actually not even concerned with the fluid change. i do think it is funny how they ask if i have done the sched maint when i have a warranty issue. i was asked how often i had my diff fluid changed when the driveshaft bearing went bad. i told them once at 30k, they told me it wouldnt be fixed under warranty. i laughed a little at that, asked how diff fluid caused a driveshaft bearing to fail, and then told them to fax me where i am required to follow all maint sched to keep warranty. they called me several hours later letting me know it was finished....under warranty. remember, if you dont change the oil, and the a/c breaks, they cant refuse to fix it under warranty. Routine mantaince only is an issue when it directly impact the broke part. DO not do a Timing belt at 40,000 but at 60,000 and your trans takes dump at 70,500 the trans is free. Do not do the trans service at 35,000 and 70,000 (DexIII or RED-1) and the trans takes dump at the same 70,500 you own a $4000 trans. There are exceptions to this when it indirectly effects the broke part. The TB was not done at 40,000 but at 60,000 (tech argument here on this) and the belt broke at 70,000 and took the oil pump drive with it and blew the eng. The Heads and some block parts might be covered by the dealer workmanship clause for the 10,000 miles on the BAD TB job. But the SEIZED eng due to lack of oil might(BIG MIGHT HERE) not be since you did not do the TB at 40,000(as required) but at 60,000. It will all depend on how much you bitch and they wish to concede to with the bad dealer TB job. It is at best a very grey area.
