I'm posting on the behalf of my father, who is the engineer, I'm the PC-literate...
He's using a Snap-on Solus scanner to pull these codes I believe, and the codes that are coming up suggest that the problem is linked to the wiring to the CPU being faulty - I read somewhere about a recall regaring a wiring harness on the Sorento, do you know anything about this?
So glad I found this forum! I was web searching for help with our Kia's problem - all togther now 1,2,3
'it stalls/engine switches of when decelerating or when first starting'
Looks like this is a common problem!
Joking apart, I would like advice, I know nothing about cars and we bought this of a second hand dealer who isnt a Kia dealer and could not help.
The problems with it first started with the car's heater. It will only blow out cold air and was taking about 1 hr to warm up.
The fab garage we use did a full service and thought that it might be dirty fuel or the air filter or the cylinder head gasket. They changed the filter and checked the head gasket and said it was okay.
It started to cut out around that time if decelerating, and often stalls when starting. We have noticed that when it has cut out and restarts the heater starts blowing out hot air.
Having gone over a road bump the airiel also now tends to go down when it stalls but the radio remains on.
We bought this car as a load carrier as its as big as a van when the back seats are taken out , and to tow my horses trailer. I am reluctant to risk towing with it given the above problems as :
a. would probably wreck the engine if it is already having problems,
b.could cause a really horrible crash if it switched of whilst towing.
I also dont like using it when my little boy is with me as I dont want him in a car crash.
Any idea what the fault/faults are? There is a lot of mention of computor showing up fault numbers on other peoples posts. Is this a diagnostic computor at a garage or one in the car?
I have had the same problems with my 2004 diesel sorento as mentioned here.
Problem - The problem seems intermittent, cuts out when accelerating, or just loses power and kicks back in, shuddering, check engine light sometimes comes on/sometimes doesnt, a code is not always given but have had fuel injector codes come up, has happened in winter and warm weather.
History - The first (Jan 08) and second time (Feb 08) it happened, the kia garage said it was poor fuel from supermarkets as opposed to somewhere like BP or Shell (?!?) and ended up cleaning the fuel injectors and replacing the fuel filter. I had to get the AA out to get me to the garage and my car would only work with the engine cover off (note why below!!!). The supermarket in question denied any problems with the fuel (apart from the diesel had possibly frozen in the cold snap we had earlier this year) and I was stuck paying for it!! The problems started before the cold snap but hey!
It has just happened for the third time, the engine kept losing power from 70 mph to 60mph and then kicking back it. This happened on a motorway (!!) and it gradually got worse until the car was barely moving and the check engine light came on.
Diagnosis - Called the AA again, who came out and immediately saw what the problem was - the engine cover has a hole in it for the oil cap and the edge of this hole is rubbing against the connector for the first fuel injector. This is causing tarnishing of the metal prongs inside it and this explains the intermittent nature of the problem - the connector is being knocked by the engine cover but because the other three fuel injector connectors are still OK, the car stutters and can keep going sometimes. This will of course only happened at certain vibration frequencies.
Solution!! - The garage has now cut out a bigger hole so hopefully the rubbing will stop and the problem will not come back (fingers crossed!!!!). Has anyone else had this problem and if so could they check the underside of their engine cover - it is very obvious if it is rubbing as I had dents in the plastic of the cover and the connector was partially worn down!
Sorry this is a long post but I think it might explain some of the other problems!
I'm just attempting to make sure that this thread my be what I'm experiencing... My 04 Sorento (gasoline- standard) just started to die out on me. I was driving on a flat road (So. Florida doesn't have hills) & the engine simply died. I coasted to the edge of the road & the engine wouldn't turn over. At times it acted like it wanted to, but seemed to choke itself out. I waited a while & it finally started up again, went about 4-6 miles & did it again. I made it home & it sat in my garage for a few hours until my roommate was available to follow me to Autozone where they determined that it was probably my battery (3+ y/o). It ran fine for the few errands that I had & went back home. Later that evening it started up fine, went ~5 miles & died again. I again sat for a while & it started. Does this match-up with anyone?

When you say the engine wouldn't turn over, do you mean that the starter engaged but could not crank/rotate the engine? - If so it would sound like an electrical problem, such as bad connects (B+ and ground).
If it could still crank the engine, then maybe its a choked fuel filter.
