I have a new (June 04) 2.5 Diesel XS & I am keen to get the oil changed @ 4K ahead of the 1st service @ 10K.
I have been advised by 2 separate dealers that the correct oil should be a "semi-synthetic" type 10W40 (I thought this was just a standard multigrade ?) but am keen to go to a full synthetic anyway.
Can anyone tell me what the recommended Kia SAE would be for my model (2.5 CRDi) & what might be a good synthetic option but without invoking the warranty ?

You need to use oil grade “API service C” for diesel engine. Check the container. Semi synthetic is probably the right one.

The viscosity depends on the temperature, for England 10w30 or 15w40 will do.

My choice is Mobil1 Super Syn 5W/40.
Most of major brand ones will not go against the warrenty(have never seen anyone has problem with engine oil in Korea if it is in the range)
However, it is personal taste

(If you have 5-speed H-matic Auto, use the original, company suggested transmission oil)

I supplied my dealer with mobil 1 turbo diesel that I bought in a french hypermarket at 37 euros (under 25 pounds) for 6 litres so it actually worked out cheaper for the service as I was not charged for the Kia oil ! Dealer hadn't had it happen before but oblidged no problem and gave me the spare new oil back as well.( Note this on a Sedona)

I'll just add the 10k interval is high for a diesel but the car the Sedona replaced was a 110000 mile Fiat that ran mobil 1 from new and I serviced every 20000 (Bought it year old 9000 on clock) It has been well used (I have a wife and kids......) but has never been opened up just filters, plugs, cambelt, I've just had the HT leads + 1 Injector replaced but thats it. The oil is black allright but drains out with no sludge at all

I used to service Generators and will agree that you need to regulary change the oil ASWELL as keeping the air intake / filter clean and dont forget labouring a diesel is as bad as thrashing one

I've used Mobil 1 TD for many years. In my opinion there's nothing in the UK to beat it although I also buy it in France for half the price (5w40 though!). Went with my dealer's oil to avoid warranty issues but just used it as a flush before replacing with the good stuff.
