I have searched every where after a solution without luck, so i have decided to make a thread and ask.
I bought a used '98 kia sephia II about a year ago, at the time the antenna mast was broken. I have now got a whole new antenna unit. My question is, should the antenna go up when i start the engine? (because mine doesn't) I think it happens with pressure from the engine, because there was a tube i could attach to the unit. If it should go up, how could i fix this problem?
Any advise would be great, thanks
Most radios have an antenna power supply wire which is only on when the radio function (not tape or CD) is used.
This said, no the antenna does not go on with the engine running, but when the head unit is on and selected to 'radio'.
If the head unit you are using does not have the antenna power wire, then connect the new antenna power to the Ignition on wire.

Quality and not quantity counts.
I have a Sadona 2003 which has an electric antenna that only comes up when the radio is switched on and when you switch the radio off it goes down, but the engine still has to be on for radio power supply as when the engine is off there is no power supply to the radio which is also linked to the antenna

Do you mean ignition switch is off?
The description sounds spot-on if the word 'engine' is substituted with 'ignition switch'.

thanks for the fast reply. Next time i get a chance im gonna look for the antenna power supply wire and see if i can hook it up. I'll write again if i have any more trouble..
i didn't know if i should post a new thread or reply the old one with the new info, and thought the best way to get the attention was to post a new thread (correct me if it should have been done a different way). I checked the antenna power supply wire, and as far as i can see, it is hooked up and good, but still no reaction from the antenna when i put on the radio(not cd or tape). The other thing is that my antenna, has no motor of its own, so its not electrical (the old didn't either). But its got a rubber tube connected to it. So i guess that when the radio is playing, it triggers air from the engine to push up the antenna. I have no idea if what im saying is complete bullshit or not
anyhow, would really love some help with the problem
Is it possible to take a picture of the two antenna?
It's a very old method to use engine vacuum to power devices, so I'm fairly confident that this is unlikely how yours works.
Some antenna have an RF amplifier in the base of them and that is all that the power wire is used for - maybe your antenna is a manual extendible with an RF amp in the base?

here are two pictures of the antenna. The old one with the broken mast, and the new(second hand) one, where i have taken the rubber tube from the old one and put on the new one. the rubber tube is squeezed into a hole in the side of the trunk. I must say, it all looks like it gets push up by engine vacuum, but im new at this.. hope the pictures help
The rubber tube is a dust cover, so that the lubricated telescopic antenna does not suck in dust from the trunk/boot and to direct any water ingress to the low point drain in the trunk.
The thin black wire with the round connection lug is the screen ground which must be grounded to the car body, and the other larger connector connects to the radio's antenna extension cable.
