Unhappy my 99 kia wont fire!!

I was driving home the other day and my check engine light started flashing
and my car was running rough (really rough) i got it home and called my brother who is the previous owner. and he told me that he had same problem and to change the ignition coils, so i did.
it was still running very rough and had a small backfire, so i wanted to drive it to my brothers house to see if it sounded like the same problem he had.
When i pulled up to his house the kia died,it turns over but won't start...
We thought that it might be a fuel problem but when you try to start the car you can smell gas.
so we took one of the coil/spark plug wires off and tried to start it to see if it was getting fire and there was no fire to the plugs!!!!!

Any ideals???
Maybe a timing belt?????

Please help

It was the timing belt!!!
the crankshaft sprocket stripped the belt thats why it didn't start..
I tell u what though, i had to take the front moter mount off just to get the timing belt cover off along with the crankshaft pulley and the water pump pulley and all the spark plugs..

and thats another thing,
the spark plugs were so tight that we had to use an impact wrench to get them out even after we busted them loose it was hard to unbolt the spark plugs..
never seen anything like it

That cover would come off without removing the mount. I did it to mine numerous times to paint it...
