My daughter's 1999 Sephia will not stay running for longer than 10-15 minutes. The car runs perfectly until it just dies after 10 minutes or so and refuses to restart for a day or so. She has spent all her summer income trying to fix it and so far no luck. The fuel pump has been replaced along with wires, battery, fuses, relays, computer and more. Any ideas...PLEASE!
It is a shame that car mechanics take people for a ride like that. They shoot in the dark, ooooo, let's replace this or that running up the bill at the same time.
You can more or less pinpoint the system that is causing the problem.
When the car dies:
1. Does it cranks?
2. Is there spark?
3. Is there fuel pressure?
4. Is the check engine light on?
Car is not overheating. Cranks but won't quite start but starts first try the next day and runs fine for 10-15 minutes then it is like someone threw a switch and just turned it off. My daughter has spent her entire summer earnings on trying to fix this car and now we are digging into my $.I am wondering if we should just write it off as a bad mistake and stop throwing good money after bad. One of the times it died near a mechanics home and he said it sounded like it was not getting fuel when we tried to restart it and that was on the way home from the garage after spending $950 for installing a new factory fuel pump and relay.

See, you are not answering all my questions. Is the check engine light on? YES, go to Autozone and get the codes read. NO, go there anyway and have them check for codes. #2 When the car does not want to start pull the spark plug, stick it back in the wire, touch the metal part of the plug to the metal part of the engine and have someone crank the engine, do it at night if possible, and look for spark. If no spark then you have an ignition problem. #3 When dead, have someone crank the engine and you press the valve on the ingector rail and see if fuel shoots out of it. No fuel pressure? Then there is a problem with a fuel system.
I believe the mechanic who tried to help me roadside did #3 on your list and found no fuel coming out. Yes, the check engine light was on.It went off for a short time after the wires were changed but came back on.

First, I would advise following the steps presented by Wasilm.
If there was no sign of fuel pressure, then this needs to be fully investigated first. It could be a fuel filter, fuel rail pressure controller, fuel pump relay, or fuel pump, or fuel pump suction strainer - a systematic aproach is needed.
I would not advise cutting your costs and dumping the vehicle just because youve been the victim of unscrupulous poorly trained mechanics. If the right aproach is used any fault can be found and corrected.

The fuel pump and relay were replaced with brand new factory parts.Would the fuel pump suction strainer, filter and pressure controller be separate from them?
