Probably dumb as a box of rocks about other things but lets not go there.
I just had the timing belt break in my wifes car. One way to know immediately if you have valve damage is when you try to crank it over it will turn over much faster than normal due to no compression. If this is the case you DEFINATELY have valve damage and you MAY have piston damage. I took it all apart and found that 7 of the 8 exhaust valves were bent but not broken. There were tiny little marks on the top of the pistons where the valves hit them but none from the intake valves. I replaced the valves, lined up the marks on the crankshaft pulley and camshaft pulleys, installed the belt, turned the crankshaft over twice and ensured all marks still lined up. I started it no problem and it idles at 800 rpm and sounds fine but when I step on it there is a hesitation now that wasn't there before but seems to run fine once the revs get up. I checked to make sure I didn't forget any hoses or sensors. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Thanks.
This is an update to the previous post. After driving the car today for a bit there is definately not as much power as there used to be. It idles rougher than it used to and under initial acceleration it bogs a bit. No back fires out the top or back. Before I removed the old belt I counted the teeth on the belt between the marks on the cam pulleys and there were 17. I just checked today and there are 18 between them now, even with the marks all lined up. Not sure what's going on here. How do I find out if I need to advance my intake cam one tooth or retard my exhaust cam one tooth? Thanks!

what was your method of puting the belt on? did you have the tensioner loose when you were turning the engine the first 2 times to take the slack out of the belt before you tightened the tensioner bolt? it sounds like your belt is too loose and it's jumping timing.
can someone please share how you get the 21mm bolt off the crank?
do i need an impact wrench? how can i hold the crank in place to unscrew it? i wish these vague directions said something about it....
Just lost my second KIA car. I had a Sephia 99. Died in 03, Transmission went at 102K Did all recommended service even just had transmission service done at dealership 45 days earlier. Dealer stated required over $5500 in repair work due to it locking up on highway and damaging the lines, mounts and flywheel. Threw car away and got a 03 RIO new. Well that one now has died. 149K did complete all service was due for another belt change soon and guess what lost some teeth on belt on highway engine tore its self up. can not even get wrench to move valves. Dealer again said engine and also trans need to be replaced at $6K. Another throwaway car. Enough is Enough never again another KIA I guess it really does mean KILLED IN ACTION. I do a lot of highway driving and followed all schedules but still problems Should have gotten rid of Rio as first day it was stalling right out of dealership lot. Said it has a few day breaking period. Ended up having to replace a sensor the next week.
