Red face About to purhase a KIA Picanto (Yes Im a Newbie)

Hi Folks. Hope everyone is OK. Glad there is a KIA forum, I dont know what I would have done without the FIAT one. By the way, FIAT stands for "Failure In Automative Technology" or "Fix It Again Tommorrow". No I shouldnt complain, its done me justice over the past year, and as my first car, its served its purpose.

Reason for this post is to say thank you to the creators of this forum, and to say I will soon be getting my hands on an 05 Picanto 1.1 LX. Just wondered if anyone can give me a run down on the car with their views etc. I know its what you get at the end of the day as far as cost is concerned, but when you've been driving a seicento like I have, and all I have is the occasional problem, with VERY LITTLE room (being 6ft 2") I would just like some peoples opinions on the car. Thanks again, and I know its not the same as it used to be, but Happy Motoring.

welcome to the site. i also started my car journey with a fiat, a cincecento. my picanto is a 100 times better than the fiat. i havent had any significant problems with it so far and wish id brought one sooner, as the fiat cost me alot in repair bills.

one thing id say tho, no disrespect to this forum, i think the fiat one was slightly better as it had more participating members

Talking Yep, i'll agree so far...

Thanks for that Newbie101. Yeah the FIAT Seicento has cost me quite a bit in a new alternator, new timing belt, clutch cable and most recently a new thermostat. As for the number of members on this site, probably due to the fact that KIA is still establishing a foothold, and not so many people have had so many problems unlike the FIATs. Nothing against FIAT at all really, Ive just had a bad experience. Italian is fine... even more so if its Ferrari...

Last year we bought a 1.1 LX auto for my Mother as the Picanto is one of the very few small cars that you can still get with a 'proper' autobox rather than a clutchless manual system. It's only done 2,000 miles, but she is absolutely delighted with it.

IMHO the Picanto is clearly off the pace dynamically compared with European machinery - I think it is a generation back from current European models and probably comparable to a mid 90's Vauxhall Corsa. However, as you have recognised, it comes in at a much lower price point than the European opposition.

I have to say that although it's no ball of fire, the Kia is a great fun machine. It has a good spec, you can park in tiny spaces and it accommodates full sized adults (in the front at least). 'Which' and other sources rate Kia reliability quite highly, so you shouldn't have too many problems (we've had none).

Good luck with new car, I'm definitely a convert to Kia having sampled the Picanto - hope you enjoy yours too.

ive got a 1.1 manual.

its not awful, but theres a few long gradiants around where i live and you can feel the car struggling if you try and do it in too high a gear. theres no hill that i havent been able to get up at a reasonable speed, just need to rev fairly high in 2nd or 3rd gear. theres a dual cariage way that is a mile stretch, and by time you get nearing the peak you;ve gone from 70mph in 5th to needing to do 55mph in 4th
