With learner drivers I can understand the clutches going. It's a testimony to the robust construction of Ford cars! But I still can't see how there is nearly a 20 mpg difference between Swampduck's and Clevatreva's cars!!!!! We all drive them diferently and under different conditions but surely KIA are not that inconsistent in the way they turn their engines? Any further comments anyone?
P.S. Had a Citroen AX 1.0 before this. Sold it with 115K miles on clock with original clutch. Will keep an eye on the Picanto!

hey up , your falling into the dealership frame of mind that learners ruin the clutches . as a professional driving instructor we have to ensure our drivers use the clutch correctly , its schoolboy stuff . if we dont it costs us dearly ,god knows how many clutches id go thru if i didnt pay attention to this . anyhow back to fuel i have managed 320+ miles out of a tank using shell fuel and only myself driving and down to 235 using asda fuel and early stage learners , differs alot doesnt it swampduck
Of course learners wreck clutches. They don't get the hang of it in five minutes! Anyway, I'm still perplexed over the fuel consumption figures differing so much between essentially the same engines. Clevatreva's car is, according to him, doing well over 400 miles on one tank! I can't get near that even when I'm driving like a granny! Any one else out there with their own experiences!
P.S. Will KIA ever introduce a diesel model into the UK?
Mine traveled 411.4 Kms with only 30 liter of Caltex with Techron Silver. The mileage keepd getting better with my car since I change the air intake from my modified intake back to the stock intake.
Maybe the fuel gauge is faulty like mine was or maybe its leaking fuel from its plastic connector from the tank like mine was as well. The best way to check the fuel consumption is to fill it right up, drive 10 miles, fill right up again and see how many litres of fuel goes in. You can then work out from those figures exactly how many miles to a litre it does and times by 4.5 to calculate how many miles per gallon. Mine from brand new did exactly what it should, 52 miles to the gallon.
Filling it up after ten miles is not really a reliable way of calculating MPG. You could then drive it on a country road at 50 mph or tackle an urban traffic jam. The results would be very different. I'm hoping people will (honestly) submit full tank to empty/fuel warning light results. I have been trying to keep to this myself and as time has passed and the car has now exceeded 8000miles, things are evening out. I am recognising that driving style, load and exterior temp/humidity do have a significant bearing on consumption figures. Still love the car to bits!
Here are the latest figures for my 2007 1.1 LS manual. Covered 334.6 miles (538.486 kilometres). That works out at 47.528 mpg or 16.83 k/L. Consumption creeping up again as the days start to cool down and warm up times increase.
You'd expect the automatic to do the gearchanging better than a human and therefore save energy ...... but it doesnt !!
Probably uses appreciable power to do the job.
Also, any extra electrical items all use energy from the battery, which means alternator working harder, using more petrol. (Air-conditioning in particular).

Just came back to read what's up. Yes, to those who ask, I get between 400 and 450 miles per fill up. I DO drive carefully, but not overly so. I often have had the A/C on over summer (it uses less fuel than the extra drag of having the windows down I reckon). I also have the blower on 1 or 2 all the time, and the radio as loud as it will go (ageing rocker).
BUT. The car does much the same journeys day and day out, yet the fuel consumption varies quite a bit. It will drop to around 55mpg and the next week up to 60mpg. Only on long runs (motorway) will it better this, which is what I said I had done that day.
Off to pick up a new car for my wife in a few days: a Cee'd 1.6 CDRi SW LS with ESP. Brand new and £14,000 OTR (not pre-reg lie my Picanto was).
One thing though. I NEVER have had the Picanto serviced by the Kia dealer. My local garage has really good, grizzled and well run in mechanics ;-)
