Kia Recall Question

Hi! I brought my 2009 Kia Borrego LX to the dealer this morning because the rear air conditioner control knob was stuck in on high heat. He phoned me this afternoon wanting more time because the guy fixing the car had the back all broken down (this terrifies me!) looking for the wires and he said it has him still wondering what the problem is. It was then that he told me about a Kia Recall (actually he called it something else) but he said the hard plastic covers on back of the seat was being replaced with cloth? My kia has the leather seats and putting cloth on the back didn't seem to make sense? Why is the plastic worse than the cloth?

Any support anyone can help me out with on either issue is greatly appreciated. I have had a ton of issues with this car ever since I bought it. I had it in the dealer almost 12 times before they figured out why the push key would only work periodically and I had to find out on my own (reading hte manuel is always a good thing) that I could push the start button in for 10 seconds and it would start that way. Another time a guy said a squirrel must have chewed on my wires and that part needed to be replaced. I park my car in my garage and unless this "squirrel" lives in my garage that wire was NOT chewed on by a squirrel. There were 4 other issues that just make me not trust these guys fixing my car and now they have my car torn apart trying to fix the back heater. It is 2 years old....very low miles and I just feel like stupid for buying this car. I must say that I bought it in one state and then 6 months later we moved. I trusted the guys back home much more than these guys. It just feels as if they don't know much about the Borrego to work on them. :(

Welcome to the forum.

They can advise you to of a "Technical Service Bulletin", but it should be your decision to proceed, particularly in a case like this where it's unlikely to be a safety issue.

Not all dealers are equal, and if I were you, I'd look for another service center.

You can view the TSB's on the KiaTech web site - see my sig for link.

There is a TSB for changing out the backs of the 2nd and 3rd row seats. I had my seats done and I'm very pleased with the results. The plastic backs would scratch very easily and mine were a mess. They replace the backs with carpet, not cloth.

Thanks for all the help! I took my car into the dealer and it looks like the rear A/C needs to be replaced. We also talked about replacing the plastic with the cloth.

I believe the service manager at my local Kia place is a new manager. Things seemed to run much more professional and this is the first time that I didn't leave the dealer feeling like I wish I hadn't purchased my Borrego. Knock on wood that this continues!!!! :)

omg... im facing the same issue with the rear a/c... when i turn it on, it moves to the max heat and gets stuck there... just got it and have only 12000 km on my EX version

are you sure they will have to change the rear unit??? if yes, then i'll be without car for several days :(

This was exciting to read this morning! Not because your car is doing the same thing, I am sorry about that, but because I have searched and searched on this issue and I couldn't find anything. It is nice to know that someone out there can understand what I am saying.

They phoned me and said that the rear A/C needed to be replaced and they would have to order the parts and they would phone me this week when it arrived. HOWEVER.......When I picked up the car the rear A/C has been working ever since? We don't want to touch it for fear it will get stuck. The weeks before I brought the car in, the rear A/C was stuck a few times on "feet only" and then it started to get stuck on Heat. The second time it got stuck on Heat it would not go back and remained stuck on heat which is when I brought it into the dealer. I read through the manual, I am not sure my rear A/C ever worked the way it was designed. I couldn't adjust the rear A/C with the front A/C like the manual states that it is suppose too?

Keep me posted on your car. Remember to bring it to the dealer when it is stuck on heat because they can't fix it otherwise. Good luck! Please let me know what your dealer says! I am interested to hear.

Take Care!

Rear AC gos directly to Max Hot when turns on!!!

I have a 2009 EX series Mohave with 80K milage. I faced to the problem when we turned on the rear a/c. It went directly to max haot and did not accept the temp or blower adjustments!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I took to kia centre and they opened the rear control unit and took out the electronic board out. after +/_ 10minutes they brought back from shop and put it again back into its place. It worked correctly. I'm sure they changed an electronic part or fuse. Unfortunately after a months or so, the same problem occured. I'm going to them to see why it broken again!!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm - I wonder if this is some kind of defect in the climate control electronics board.

I just recently bought a 2009 EX Limited and when we test drove it we noticed the same symptom (rear A/C - Heat control would jump immediately to full heat and become unresponsive to attempts to move it to the cool setting). It only has 24000 miles, so it was covered by warranty (they replaced the rear climate control logic board).

I hope that it is now fixed for good and it doesn't come back.

Having the Same problem on a limited. It was intermittent originally and the dealer couldn't witness it. It is is all the time now so I am going back in and going it will still be under warranty.

Furthermore, is it normal to lose cooling when the car is sitting at idle? Out ac cuts out at traffic lights and the dealer has explained that this is some normal fuel saving procedure that the vehicle is designed to do. We find it unacceptable and plan to repair or override if necessary.

My rear heat controls are is stuck on high as well.

Holy molly. There is a TON of people with this rear heat controlls problem.

I have to fix mine as well because taxi customers don't like max heat in the middle of summer!

Any advice on what people paid to fix it?

I like the idea of a 10 minute kia fix. 10 min = 1 hour of labor at dealer. 110 bucks.. Oh well could be worse.

Dealer replaced the board for the rear AC and the condenser fan had an internal short and replaced it as well... all under warranty. The biggest inconvenience is that our nearest dealer doesn't stock many parts for the Borrego and everything has to be shipped in.

To answer the question, traffic jams were unbearable and without AC, high humidity often resulted in fogging the windows.
