Angry 2004.5 Spectra rattle/grinding engine noise

I have a 2004.5 spectra with 62,000 miles there is a loud grinding/knocking noise coming from the engine. It seems to be around the pulley area. It does not get any louder if you accelerate.

Welcome to the KIA forums. It sounds like it may be related to timing belt or its pulleys. I would advise not to drive the car too much and get it looked at as soon as you can. Do not wait and continue to use the car. It sounds like a timing belt pulley might be siezing up and it will cause big damage if it does.It would be due for a timing belt change at 60000, so get it done if it hasn't been . The belts usually last a bit longer , but not a good idea to push your luck and wreck the engine if you have a pulley sieze or the belt slips or breaks.

TAKE YOUR TIME, THINK IT OUT, DO IT RIGHT, DO IT ONCE!! original quote by me as far as I know.

None of this makes sense. I agree with pulsar86 thou do not drive it allot. If it were eng related at all it would get louder and faster with revs. T/B or pulley. And I was thinking also it might be as I recall the 2004.5 2.0L has a front cover gear/gear oil pump. That would as well speed up and slow down the thump/grind when going bad on a 62,000 2004.5 car. Oil changes at 7500-10,000 help this too. But not saying that you did this. Also KIA tells ALL of us to use 5w20 or 5w30 is hard to find. But book tells you as well 10w30/10w40/15w40. SO if you went off the reservation and did as you felt and not what kIA is telling us long time frame oil changes and thicker oils will help all this along too. But form your post(non eng speed related) I tend to like to go with following.
Based on this and the fact that if you look and think about it ALL (98%) FWD transverse engs have pulley side eng mounts. If one of those goes bad it will thump and bop around. BUT not get louder or speed up as the eng torques/rocks and shakes. If a trans mount goes bad it will make the good eng mount thump from the excess load on it then.
