you need to change it after 30000 miles if you dont it will completely clogged and then lean out your motor. when that happens your check engine light will come on for a lean code and that will not be covered under waranty. they are only like $20 and they are easy for you to change.

Hey. . .

The people on the SUV Suburban forum I belong to say it's a good idea to change your fuel filter with every 1,000 gallons of gas.

OK and is this the Internal filter ($99.95) or the External filter (79.95) that we're supposed to change every 40K ?

OK I went to KIA to get my oil change & spark plugs/wires changed out. While I was there I asked for an estimate on getting the fuel filter changed. I've got 58K miles and figured it was about time to change it.

So anyway the service dude tells me he will check on it. about 15 minutes later he comes to the waiting area and lets me know that the Fuel Filter in my 2006 Spectra EX is located INSIDE the Gas tank and is somehow tied to the Fuel Pump & the Fuel Filter is not meant to be changed out in the 2006 spectra.

He also said that If they were to try to change out the Filter then it would effect the Fuel Pump and both would have to be changed out at the same time.

Now im wondering. If the Fuel Filter is located inside the Fuel Tank. Would you also have to replace the whole damned fuel tank as well as the Fuel Pump? JEEZ this seems a bit extreme. Guess it somehow makes sense to Korean engineers anyway...

First off. I got as well a 2003 Spectra LS. I had 54,000 on it when we did the fuel filter late. That said. Most all fuel filters these days are in the tank on the pump/sender unit. The job cost with discount coupon with other things done at same time, but just the filter job portion was $68.84. It is right under back seat(or maybe it was in the trunk) and takes all of 30 mins to do. The 2004 Sorento LX got its done at 45,000 and it was done with the fuel sender fix/recall and was $78.98 complete no discount coupon. It was I know for sure under the back seat under a panel and took no more then 30 mins. I had the misfortune to have had a botched job done. This was a total surprice to me at this dealer too. Very sensitive to the o-rings being done right. And that caused my pump to fail at 45,051 miles they said. Really just on the way home form dealer. And so at 45,052 miles I got a new pump/sender/filter assby free under warrenty. 47,xxx on it now no peep of trouble now.

This might have allot to do with why they told you that the Spectra you have does not have a changable fuel filter. The monkeys mess them up more often then not and they have to replace free pumps at that dealer in LA. Not making it right nor correct, just cover our ass proofing. If we do not do them,we can't break them. And tell you it is not needed. That is BS as you clearly see with common sence.

BTW any external filter could be misundertood for a fuel one. And is really the VAPOR System cansister. If the dealer quoted(overcharging too) you $99.95 for an internal filter then there is a part number for a non replaceable filter no? Strike one and two for them. Two the VAPOR external filter/canister might be $79.95 if he quoted you that. But I seem to think again it is an overchargeing issue, strike three.
