I have a 2002 Spectra and no matter where I position the far right air control (the one that controls airlow direction to feet, face or windshield) The air keeps comming straight out (face) . When I twist the dial nothing feels broken. It was working one day and then just lost functionality the next. Has anyone ever experienced this and know the fix?
This happened to my old '98 Dodge Stratus. I never figured out what happened to it though cuz I traded 'ol squeaky in for Mz Silver

I would like to know what you find out though. Just out of curiosity.

My guess would be that it is broken. Your options, 1. Take it apart and fix it, or 2. buy the whole unit off ebay for any where from 5 to 30 dollars. A ny questions?
I had the same exact problem in my 2002 Spectra so I purchased a new dash switch but replacing it had no effect ($14 to buy; the local Kia shop wanted $150 to install it. I did it myself in 10 minutes). So my guess was the motor which activates the vent shutter had stopped working but I had no idea how to find it without tearing the entire dash apart (the car is falling apart enough on its own, I didn't need to help it any).
Since the technically correct but otherwise useless answer "its broke, fix it" didn't help, a search of some of the other forums found this response;

"Called up the dealer, the guy was pretty cool emailed me the whole print out of the HVAC and climate control Unit. Turns out that it can only be one thing, and thats the directional control Motor.. seems like it fails or gets stuck... New part $98.. so I may take a look at it and see if I can fix it or get it semi-functional, its located behind the glove box so getting to it wont be too difficult."

So take a look behind your glove box and see if the problem is your Directional Control Motor. Hope this helps!
