Question Engine part query

Hi guys,

I have a diesel Cerato and am wondering what a certain part does, here is my best description, anyone know what it does, cheers:

it sits on the right hand side of the engine near the bulkhead and it has a push button on top that I can press on and after a few presses it goes hard and cannot be pushed on.

Any ideas?

It is the 'primer' for your diesel system. If you have run out of diesel, then fill up, it is best to keep pushing this unit to force fuel into the diesel pump to prime it. Failure to do so could cause premature failure of your pump or just a flat battery.

Thanks, so it serves no purpose unless I run out of diesel so?

As far as I know, no other purpose. Maybe someone with the same vehicle could confirm.

But your description points that way, you will find them on most, if not all diesels.

Further to this, it would also be beneficial to use the primer after changing fuel filter or doing work on the fuel system. On some vehicles, this primer pump is actually fitted to the top of the fuel filter.
