Question removing old license plate

I have a 03 Spectra and am trying to remove the (rear) old license plate to put the new one on, without much luck. I called the dealer, they said just unscrew the old one. I ended up bending the old plate to see why it wouldn't just unscrew, and there are nuts on the back, but I don't know how to access them. I used WD-40 too, tore up my trunk to see if there is access back there, and searched this site and the web to try to get the plate off....
thanks if you can help!

so you are just trying to remove the license plate?

i would think the nuts would be for the framing part that the plate screws into.

License Plates usually unscrew

Yes, I am trying to remove the license plate. I looked at it again and it has screws (old metal, rusty) and nuts holding it in the back, but I can't access those nuts to hold them in place so I can unscrew the screws. They changed the plates at the dealer when I bought this car, maybe I will just take it back there.....
