2006 Spectra power steering issue

Back in August I did a timing belt and replaced all of the drive belts. About a month after that, the power steering belt starts to slip when you're at idle and turn the wheel. The belt itself is tight, I'm only able to move it up and down a couple of millimeters. I took the belt off the pump, and the pumped turned freely without any issue. The belt looks fine, put it back on and the same issue. I did notice there is a very small amount of looseness on the power steering pump pulley, maybe 1mm.

I'm thinking it's the power steering pump, but it's odd that it turns freely and doesn't bind up.

Any of you all have any suggestions?

I have this same issue right after having all belts replaced. I've done some searching over at a few other sites and they all believe it to be the Alternator Belt. I personally tightened the bejesus out of my PS belt and still have the issue but I have not been able to do the same to the Alternator belt just yet.

The following are posts from those sites:

"okay, I just fixed this 10 minutes ago in my 03 Elantra. To stop the P/S belt squealing (most notable in cold weather), you need to tighten the alternator belt. There is 1 bolt above the alternator, and 1 below (have to go under the car). Loosen them, then move the alternator by tightening the tensioner bolt (on top of alternator). tighten up both bolts again and voila...no more squealing."

and

"altenator/water pump belt (and more then likely the one squealing) loosen the 12mm bolt on the bracket just above the alt....there will be another long bolt that sits perpendicular to that bolt and will screw into the block (this block is the one that the 12mm bolt holds down.) you have to turn it (i forget which way) a couple of turns and check the deflection same as the power steereing."

Please let us know if this works for ya as other members may have the same issue.

What brand belts did you use? For driving the accessories on the Spectra engines I like Goodyear Gatorback belts.. They grip better, are quieter, and seam to last longer...Some of the auto stores brand belts are cheap and will slip and fail pretty quickly....
You might try lightly sanding the pulleys as they can become glazed if the belt you were using was slipping...
As for timing belts I ONLY use GATES... I don't want that belt breaking.

I had this same issue when replacing my P/S pump. I tightened the P/S belt as much as I dared (maybe 1/4" of play between pulleys). Because I was still having slipping issues, I took it to the dealer and had them take a look at it. They stated that they had to tighten the belt to prevent it from slipping and squealing. You might try tightening it up a bit more as well.
