Is my car really worth this little?

I am looking at trading in the Cee'd due to a need for more space, and the car is now being valued at 4000 - 4300? its a 2010 Cee'd 2 with 47k on the clock...

Does this sound right?

Just spoken with the dealers and they recon 5k is a good offer but at auction 4.5k would be a good offer, maybe its not so bad?

Part Ex for a 2010 59 plate Ceed 2 petrol is £5250 with 30,000 miles on it. The extra miles will knock a fair bit off that.

If its a 10 plate or 60 plate its worth £5555 or £5870 again with 30,000 miles.

If its any consolation a Focus that would have cost several £1000's more when new in 2010 is worth little more now.

Shop around. This was my 59 plate 3 SW after I got £8500 for it against a new cee'd 2 Sportswagon automatic. It was sold within 3 weeks.

Just got £8k trade in for my 60 plate SW EcoDynamics 89bhp. Too many little things going wrong with the car and pleasant but incompetent servicing / warranty handling means I traded it in for a BMW 520d M Sport Touring.
Use 'What Car' valuation and take it to your dealer - worked OK for me.
Good luck, from an ex-Kia owner. (Probably never another - the least reliable, most troublesome car I have ever so far owned.)

Just read this and became worried, did I make a dreadful mistake 2 1/2 years ago when we bought our Ceed SW"3" CRDi.

Looked at loads of opposition before we bought but the cars and generally dreadful dealers helped us keep our money in the bank for probably 4 months. The serious choice eventually came down to 2 because we liked both cars and both dealers treated us like customers rather than tyre kickers. We also looked at getting another Focus Estate because it had been totally reliable but was a bit small for rear seat passengers.

Choice A was the BMW 318d ES Touring. We really liked the car but the luggage area was a little small and we were nervous about doing 450 mile holiday runs without a spare. OK the car had run flats but if we had bought a spare it would have robbed even more of the already slightly challanged boot space. It needed a few extras fitting, the most essential was cruise control. After some negotiation the prioce to swap was £20,000 but this was for the basic car.

Choice B was the Ceed SW "3" CRDi. Would have gone for the 2 but preferred the "3" seats and at the time the "2" did not have cruise. It was not as refined on the road as the 318d but it had loads more lugaage space and even thought the standard car only had a space saver a full size spare fits in the hole with no loss of luggage space (however you do loose the pointless tray). After negotiation the price to swap was £12,000.

Choice C Focus 1.6 TDCi Titanium. After huge discounts £13,000 to swap but it still had less kit than the Ceed "3".

£8,000 was a lot extra for a badge and a bit more refinement (and nice carpets), obviously bought the Ceed SW. 2 1/2 years later no regrets and even after 8 hours in the car car continuously we get to our destination still awake and feeling more refreshed than we ever did in the Focus that preceeded it (no pun intended).

Just checked on Parkers. Trade in on our Ceed SW is £8600, trade in on the 318d Touring is £13,100 and Trade in on the Focus is £8900.

Forgetting the Focus (it would actualluy have cost us £700 more in depreciation than the Ceed) because we preferred the others the BMW would be worth £4,500 more but would have cost us over £8,000 extra originally. Think we made the correct decision.

BUT we generally keep our cars 5 years so this is totally academic and just filling time on a slack day.

STOP PRESS Just looked at the trade in prices for 5 year old 318d's and 5 year old Ceed CRDi. The BMW is worth only £3,500 more than a Ceed SW, even happier now.

I wondered how much space you needed and when. If its for passengers there ain't much you can do but change but if its for luggage etc have you looked at trailers. I was surprised how reasonable a little trailer is when I bought one.

We used to used a trailer when we originally went camping in the early 80's, 4 people and Ford Escort simply did not work. Trailer was really cheap but ultimately it was a pain. You were restricted to 60 mph on M-ways/dual carriageways and 50 on A roads thus it took much longer to get to your destination. Our trailer was never quite waterproof thus even tough cloths were in the boot stuff in the trailer always got wet. It never happened to us but trailers were often stolen off sites.

Gave up after a couple of years and bought a bigger car.

That figure sure sounds low James, really hope with the useful tips above you manage to get nearer £6-7k.
Insurance figured my 60 plate pro with 29k on clock was worth £7k, so you should certainly squeeze more than 5k for your similar age & mileage one.

Thanks for all the replies guys, to be honest, I couldn't face the fight, I have two kids, and enough problems to deal with than trying to fight anyone to buy the car, sit with it on the market, and then have to pay out more to buy another car, it was the perfect opportunity and I just decided to seize it!

4K in total, they are trying to sell it on for £4995, not going to get that but hey ho!

I couldn't face the depreciation, so didn't want to wait any further but I have swapped the car for a 2005 Ford Focus CMAX Estate, I needed the boot space primarily and a diesel automatic. I got the car with less miles than my Cee'd had on it, and to be honest it made sense for me to do it! I enjoyed my time in the cee'd but several dealers all said they would give me less than 3800 for her, and I didn't fancy waiting any longer, not selling her, then taking her back to get less for her!

To be honest, I jumped quickly and if I didnt have so much going on in my personal life, I would have been a bit more conscious and considered selling privately but I cant really afford to throw money at adverts, and time in the hope that it goes, especially since I have recently been clocking on more like 1500 miles per month, that would just cost too much in the value later...
