At my last service my car was returned with a bill of£312 which included a three year service and an MOT. I first noted the handbrake had not been taken up and it was in need of that service. I did get back to reception later and spoke to the manager with regard to the handbrake and my feeling my service may be missing other details. I explained I would be having my future services at a local Bosch garage. He was quite upset, indeed offering another free service which I could observe, if I wished. I did at this time ask for an explanation what the service kit at £58 included, I also asked why GDT Magnatec oil was sold to me in Ltr bottles at £8.10 a go, and what had happened to bulk purchasing. I have to say his replies were amusing, if not very informative. I suppose if he gets lots of these questions it must become easy to deal with.
My brother in law owned a Ford main agency when I was younger and I recalled his advice, offered only when he had sold the garage, to always have my cars serviced at a garage that did not sell cars. His explanation was that these garages depended solely on their customers and therefore take much more care. He told me first year services were a big profit maker, as very little actually needed to be done. He then added that had I ever wondered why so much grease was to be found on door hinges. His explanation, complete with a big smile was it was one of the few things an average customer notices after a service, that and a freshly washed car. Small mileage drivers were also treasures he pointed out, as costs could be saved there.
The door grease is not to be found to often nowadays, but I did noticed wet lubricant spray after my last service.
I only recently read on this forum my guarantee would be honoured by Kia, providing I went by the book, so my taking the car to a Bosch garage can surely be described as a no brainer. Or have forum members other ideas?
Garages don't buy oil in 1 litre bottles, they buy it in bulk and sell it by the litre, the Ceed needs 5.3.
You can indeed get your car serviced by any VAT registered garage and keep the warranty intact but they MUST use genuine Kia parts and it is necessary to have records of this should you ever need to have any warranty work carried out, don't think "used Kia Parts" being handwritten on the invoice would be enough.
There are two catches with servicing away from the Kia network, the paint/body inspection can only be done by a Kia garage, its normally free when carried out with a service but if you have your service done elsewhere you would need to go to your dealer for the inspection and stamp and they then normally charge (have heard upto £50) wiping out some if not all the money you saved. The second catch comes should you need a warranty repair, rather than just turning up and getting it done the garage would want proof that it has been serviced to the Kia Schedule exactly, would Bosch have the Kia service checklist?
IMHO its not worth the hassle but there again my local Kia dealer is only 1 1/2 miles away and seems pretty good with service costs less than we used to pay for a Ford.
£312 doesn't sound too bad. About £40 (maybe up to £50) of that is the MoT. If that includes VAT, then the service and parts was £226. That isn't too bad, but maybe £50 or so higher than others are paying. Certainly not worth going outside the Kia network for servicing. Just negotiate with your dealer, as they seem to drop prices if you ask.
Our Soul goes in for its 3rd service next week, due to the mileage, but doesn't need the MoT until June. I didn't ask how much it was going to cost.

Garages buy oil in bulk then and sell it by the litre; I would never have guessed that.
Thanks for informing me that warranty repair must be undertaken using Kia parts. I must have beenthinking Bosch made their own replacement parts. If they wanted to fit outsourced parts I would expect to know about it.
I suppose the missing paint inspection could invalidate all the rest of Kias guarantee, but I would love to challenge this in a small claims court. Garages seem to have a bad track record when facing a common sense court, I hear.
Bosch has the servicing information available on Kia discs, or so they advise me, perhaps they lie though and just get by on experience?
My nearest Kia garage is one hundred and ten miles away. Two hundred miles to change the oil and top up the window wash fluid. Yes I know they do other things, or are supposed to such as handbrake adjustment. I recently talked to the mechanic who serviced my car, under twenty one for sure and still learning.
Sorry Ceed 3. I wanted a discussion and felt I got a lecture. Or perhaps it may be you work for Kia?

Reason: typos

A little bird tells me Kia are reducing MOT costs if you have a full service. Its a pity it did not work out.

I don't see the point of going outside the KIA dealers for a service. The dealers have the latest information on updates to software, and campaign information that other workshops will not have access to. Also they know the cars and their foibles, have the correct special tools, a supply of consumable parts, and my dealer does free MOTs for life on all cars they sell. No brainer.

No lecture just fact. And I don't work for Kia, just typing out what is fact as I said before.
Anyway you missed the points I made. ONLY a Kia dealer can carry out warranty work, your Bosch place cannot do warranty repairs even using Kia parts. Missing a body/paint inspection would not invalidate your mechanical warranty, how could it but it would certainly wipe loads of money off the cars value.
And why does everybody these days want to challenge stuff in small claims court, if you get the service and inspections carried out correctly there would be nothing to challenge. The £150 court fee is more than you will save by using Bosch.
Suggest you get a car from a manufacturer with a dealer closer next time.

If JF lives in Achmelvich there are no close KIA dealers and others will be scarce, the nearest KIA dealer is 88 miles away in Inverness. If you choose to live in a remote area you have to live with the consequences.

You have done your research Deeps I see, but my Pro ceed registers one hundred and ten miles to Inverness. Strangely my late Octavia agreed. Not used to you Experts slipping up like that. If I move to Bosch its only about forty-six to go.
I do live in a remote area but its sheep, not cars one has to look out for, and crime has still to be invented. Nearest dealers are in Inverness, unless one fancies sixty miles of single track.
John
Is it really worth going to Bosch when it only 50 miles closer and you will still have to go to Kia for body inspections and any warranty work Bosch identify. Its not like you are going to get stuck in traffic is it.
