2010 ceed 1.6 CRDi auto starting problem

over the past 2 weeks, when i try to start my car, i wait for the glow plug light to go out and try to start the car, i hear a click and nothing happens. when i try to start it again, i wait for the glow plug light to go out, turn the key and the engine starts (sometimes it takes 2 atempts).

i had it in at kia yesterday to get checked out and it started first time, every time. they plugged it into diagnostics and it came back with no faults found.

so, i started it today, and guess what? it didnt start, it just clicked. on second attempt it started ok. after driving it for 15minutes, i went to the shop. when i got back in my car to start it, it just clicked again then started on second attempt.

i feel that it may be a problem with the imobiliser. why do they only plug the car into the machine and not try to diagnose the problem without the machine? what happened to the good old mechanic?

has anyone else had this problem and how was it resolved??

If it was immobilizer, the engine will be revved by the starter, but it wouldn't start.

You should record a short video what happens and go to KIA again. It sounds as a starter problem.
btw. Starter usually clicks when the battery has no enough power to rev the engine. But I'd not say this is the issue with yours, since it does start on the second attempt.

As Nikola said, try and record it on your phone, either way, keep going back and be persistent and say it continually keeps doing it.

thanks, i also thought it may have been the starter motor but dont they usually make whining noise if they dont work propperly?

the car only has 5000miles on the clock and its 11months old

Hi with regard to your starting problem it is possible that you have a loose terminal on the battery I would check this just to make sure the other alternative is wiring to the solenoid or even the solenoid itself. Have had this problem with all makes of cars over the years and is not isolated just to Kia????

Hi all. had the problem resolved. it turns out it was my glow plugs at fault. i am supprised at this as the car is only a year old 5.5k miles on the clock.

lets see how long it takes for the problem to arise again.

hi all, back again. 3 weeks later and guess what, its been back in for some more glow plugs as the diagnostics came back with a fault. car started playing up within a week of the last set of plugs being fitted. now, if a car has gone through a set of plugs in 3 weeks, surely its not the plugs at fault but something relating to them?? well, i expect it to happen again and soon so it will be going in to get sorted again and they can have it untill its fixed! i assume this work has all been done under warranty but as its a motability leased car im not 100% sure. if this continues i will cancel my lease and get a new car. this is a shame as i really like my ceed 3 (without its problems).

I also have a Cee'd 3 CRDI auto with running issues. These are not the same as yours (i.e not starting), but a massive judder at around 1600rpm, where the car shakes. This problem is affecting quite a few auto crdi Cee'd owners. Kia HQ are aware of the problem and are working on a fix. Look at the Kia UK Owners Club there is a topic running on there about this.

There is some sort of fault with the injector timing and the automatic gearbox. If there are any Cee'd CRDI auto owners with the updated Cee'd model (i.e. 2010 year) from main land Europe reading this, and having similar problems, I would be interested to hear.
