great! make sure to run the engine dry of oil long enough, so you can tell us how the pistons look after they go through the engine block

it's definitely a good test to see how far the warranty goes

How will I know if it's gone dry if there's not a little light?

trust you lot to get off topic again...lol...

I notice I use quite a bit of oil...which I expected .....as I do a lot of stopping/starting and short trips as part of my business... have also done nearly 7000 miles in 3 1/2 months!!!

well, turbodiesels always use some oil, in 1,9tdi caddy at work up to 0,5 liter/1000km, especially in short runs in the city or under high loads. my mechanic told me not to worry, it's normal. he said that a typical alfa romeo would go up to 1 liter/1000km, diesel or petrol regardless, again normal.

see the manual what it says about normal oil consumption.

interesting enough, my 1,4 astra didn't use a drop in 43000km, and as you may know I rev my cars quite a lot, and drive in the city most of the time.
